DIY Reed Diffuser Base

Ready base and solubilizer MMB (Methoxymethylbutanol) is a special multifunctional ingredient produced by the Japanese company Kuraray. It is a transparent and amphiphilic liquid with a slight odor, which is used in the production of a wide range of products: as a base for aroma diffusers, as a solubilizer for fragrances in detergents and cleaning agents, in nail polish removers, in aerosols and disinfectants. Component characteristics and features of use

INCI: 3-methoxy-3-methyl-1-butanol (Listed CTFA - INCI : Methoxymethylbutanol)

CAS: 56539-66-3

Dosage: 3-80%

Flash point: 71°C. When adding 20% water to MMB, the solution ceases to be flammable.

Use: soluble in water and organic solvents. When making candles, it is mixed with fragrance, and then with wax or paraffin. Stable at pH 2.0 - 13.0.

Storage: in a dark, dry place in a tightly closed package at room temperature. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Aromatics and air fresheners

MMB is used in a large number of products for aromatizing rooms and textiles. It serves as an excellent solubilizer of fragrances, as a base for aroma diffusers, as a stabilizer of the mixture when making candles.

As a base for aroma diffusers, you can use 70-80% MMB base, and 20-30% fragrances. The amount of fragrance or essential oil to add depends on the type of fragrance and its dosage. To improve the evaporation of the base, you can also add up to 10% alcohol.

MMB is used in the manufacture of gel air fresheners for home and car, gel aroma balls, water aroma sprays. Most often, it is used as a solubilizer in a proportion of 3 parts MMB and 1 part fragrance. However, the best solubilizing proportions must be selected empirically in order to achieve complete dissolution of the fragrance or essential oil and maintain the transparency of the aqueous solution.

Why MMB in candle making? Let's compare MMB and other solubilizers (Dipropylene glycol and Isopropyl myristate), as well as their compatibility with wax and paraffin. As a result of testing, Dipropylene glycol separated from paraffin and soy wax, while MMB showed complete dissolution.

As you can see, adding 3% MMB to paraffin stabilized the appearance of the candle (its homogeneity when solidifying). MMB also helps fragrances dissolve better in wax, including preventing recrystallization of such popular aromatic components as Vanillin and Ethyl Vanillin, if they are pre-dissolved in MMB.

In washing powders, MMB has a number of advantages: it is biodegradable, has a weak effect on enzyme activity, shows good efficiency in stain removers, in concentrated formulations it helps to dilute the detergent even at low temperatures.

In multifunctional surface cleaners, MMB exhibits excellent degreasing properties, allows you to reduce the amount of surfactant in the overall formula, does not have an irritating effect, is a good alternative to glycol ethers (Butylglycol, Butyldiglycol, Methoxypropanol), and also a good alternative to D-limonene (D-limonene).

It is also used in formulas for window cleaners, car care products, oven cleaners, rinse aids, carpet cleaners, and more.

Other Uses

MMB is used as an alternative to acetone in the production of nail polish remover. It has a slight odor and does not cause a feeling of drying or whitening of nails or skin. And when used in hand sanitizers, MMB is very gentle on the skin.
