Astatrol Astaxanthin is the Most Powerful Antioxidant for Anti-Aging Cosmetics

Astaxanthin is a natural antioxidant extracted from the microscopic algae Haemotococcus pluvialis, which has pronounced anti-aging properties and prevents photo-aging of the skin. The Japanese company Fuji Chemical Industries provides high quality raw materials and 100% guarantee of the natural origin of the component. Below we will explain the difference between synthetic and natural astaxanthin.

Characteristics of the ingredient and specifics of use

INCI: Haematococcus pluvialis extract

Ingredients: Haematococcus algae extract containing esterified astaxanthin complex, medium-chain triglycerides, mixed tocopherols. The content of the main substance is 5%.

Appearance: dark red viscous oily liquid.

Dosage (percentage of use in cosmetics): 0,01-0,08 %

Solubility: in oil

Use: to be added to the oil phase of the cosmetic or to a ready-to-use emulsion. It is necessary to maintain a pH of 5.5 or higher in the cosmetic. It colors the cosmetic orange or red depending on the dosage.

Storage: long-term storage is recommended in a dark place at an average temperature of about 10 C, protect from direct sunlight. Temporary transport at a different temperature is allowed. Do not exceed a storage temperature of 30 C.

What is astaxanthin and the specifics of its origin?

Natural astaxanthin is a carotenoid found naturally in many marine organisms - crabs, shrimp, salmon, as well as in algae. In order to produce natural astaxanthin for the cosmetic and pharmaceutical markets, special places (lakes) are built to grow the raw material, as well as reactors for its processing. Such a process itself is expensive and this affects the price of the component. In the cosmetic market you can find many types of synthetic astaxanthin at a fairly low price. And if you see statements that the component is natural, concentrated and the price is low - do not believe this statement. Cheap synthetic astaxanthin is even used on chicken farms to give eggs a bright color, although such astaxanthin cannot be used as a dietary ingredient in the USA, EU, Japan, Australia, Korea, India and other countries. Synthetic astaxanthin is not esterified with natural fatty acids, is often water soluble, and when added to oil has the ability to crystallize rather than dissolve. Petrochemical derivatives are often the source of synthetic astaxanthin. In terms of color, natural astaxanthin has a bright orange-red color, while synthetic astaxanthin can color cosmetics in a blackish purple. Therefore, when choosing an active ingredient for cosmetics, focus exclusively on the natural, effective and safe form of astaxanthin - astaxanthin derived from natural algae. It must be 100% 3S, 3'S isomers, esterified and free of impurities such as pheophorbide (a breakdown product of chlorophyll) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Cosmetic Properties of Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin has a stronger anti-aging effect, but the main advantage of the ingredient is considered to be its powerful antioxidant activity and singlet oxygen scavenging. Astaxanthin is able to protect skin fibroblasts from singlet oxygen damage, thereby increasing cell viability and stimulating collagen synthesis. Due to its molecular structure, astaxanthin is a highly potent antioxidant with a high affinity for singlet oxygen and is extremely effective in quenching free radicals. The action of astaxanthin is to suppress and remove singlet oxygen, superoxide radicals and lipid peroxide radicals that damage cells.

Ultraviolet radiation and air pollution deprive the skin of the nutrients necessary to maintain the hydrolipid barrier. As a result, the skin becomes dry and takes on an unhealthy appearance. But thanks to its powerful antioxidant activity, astaxanthin protects the skin and promotes its recovery, even after exposure to the sun. This is why it is often included in sunscreen or after-sun products. Astaxanthin promotes skin regeneration, reduces wrinkles and increases skin elasticity, which has been confirmed by research (see below).

Astaxanthin is also able to support corneocytes, preventing lipid peroxidation and subsequent skin dryness. This increases hydration and reduces TEWL, increasing skin elasticity and normalizing the hydrolipidic balance.

Use in natural cosmetics: finished formulations

Astaxanthin is widely used in premium segment cosmetics due to its high purchase price. However, the low input percentage ensures a comparatively high availability of the component. For example, for a 30 g cream with a maximum dosage of 0.08%, you need only 0.024 g of Astatrol Astaxanthin, i.e. two hundredths of a 5 g bottle, which you can buy in the Beurre shop.

Astaxanthin has long been introduced into the formulations of well-known cosmetic companies Oriflame, Nivea, Thalgo, as well as American companies Derma E, Mirai, Ecco Bella, Suntegrity Skincare, Lindi Skin, Japan's Juju Cosmetics, Kose Corp. and others. It is commonly used in the formulations of the following cosmetics

  • Moisturizing creams for face and body
  • Sunscreen and after-sun care products
  • Eye creams
  • Anti-aging cosmetics
  • body lotion
  • restorative creams after peeling and other skin-damaging procedures
  • face and eyelid serums
  • whitening cosmetics
  • active facial masks
  • Scalp care products, including those for hair loss.
