Natural plant salicylic acid in cosmetics
Plant salicylic acid is a natural extract of black willow bark that has up to 10% salicylic acid in its composition, which is much more effective than the synthetic derivative. Black willow bark contains high levels of salicylates and tannins. These compounds are traditionally used in skin care as an astringent and anti-inflammatory.
Precautions: please read FDA guidance on the use of BHA (beta-hydroxy acids).

Origin of Willow Bark Extract ingredient
Black Willow or Salix nigra (Black Willow) is a medium-sized deciduous tree; the largest members of the North American Willow species, growing from 10-30m in height. Despite the name Black Willow, the bark of most specimens is dark brown or gray, and begins to crack as the tree ages.
The Black Willow has proven its usefulness in various ways. The roots of the tree were used by the Patawatomi Indians to make scarlet dye. Charcoal from Black Willow is often used in the making of gunpowder. The roots of Black Willow are very bitter and were used as a substitute for Quinine (antipyretic, a medicine to fight malaria) in early American settlements. The bark was used as a poultice to treat cuts, wounds, sprains, bruises and swelling. When bathed, it was considered an astringent to treat psoriasis and other skin conditions. The leaves were used internally to treat minor fevers and colic.
Black Willow bark may be substituted for use with White Willow (Salix alba)( or white willow). The main chemical constituents of both species are Tannin and Salicin. In the Americas, the Cherokee, Blackfoot and Iroquois Indians created a tea from White Willow bark to relieve headaches, fevers, general aches and pains of labor. Then in 1828, German and French chemists were able to isolate the main active ingredient salicin, a glucoside of Salicylic Acid, from White Willow bark. Black Willow is just as capable of maintaining the ability to function against the same diseases as White Willow, making Black Willow a good candidate for use in the cosmetic industry. Even today, willow bark extract is used as an herbal medicine to treat pain and acts as an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. In the cosmetic industry, willow bark extracts are used as a natural source of salicylic acid. As reported by the Society of Investigative Dermatology, willow bark extract provides the benefits of salicylic acid, such as exfoliation and antimicrobial action, without any of the irritation that usually accompanies its use.
Plant salicylate or Willow Bark Extract is obtained from the bark of the black willow tree. Willow Bark Extract contains 10% salicylates. In its standardized form, Willow Bark Extract provides a compatible level of salicylates, these are what is commonly referred to as the
“natural salicylic acid”, which allows it to be used as an active ingredient. The component is completely water soluble, and can be used in any cosmetic formula. It accelerates cell renewal, acts as a natural antimicrobial agent.
natural antimicrobial agent, or can be a substitute for synthetic salicylic acid.
Antimicrobial Efficacy
- Salicylic acid has been determined to be part of the endogenous defense mechanism of plants against invading pathogens;
- Black Willow Bark and Salix alba or White Willow are interchangeable and are sources of salicylic acid-like substances;
- Willow Bark Extract is standardized at 10% salicylates.
Plant salicylic acid is used for skin renewal, treating acne and other skin conditions, it enhances the skin cell renewal process without irritation. Willow bark extract has also demonstrated antimicrobial activity. With 2.5 - 5.0% of the substance, the extract adds preservative properties to formulas, thereby maintaining the overall microbial integrity of the finished product.
Willow bark extract is recommended for toning most skin types. It is especially useful in anti-aging formulas and for acne or other skin conditions. Salicylic acid disinfects, dries the surface of the skin, regulates sebum production (eliminating oily shine), and counteracts bacteria that lead to pimples, acne. It also makes black spots less noticeable (by discoloring them). It has a whitening effect.
