Rejuvenating and revitalizing borago oil in cosmetics
Borago oil, or also called borage oil, borage oil or cucumber grass oil, is an organic source of fatty polyunsaturated acids, tannins, saponins, minerals, caratinoids and vitamins. It is highly valued in cosmetology primarily for its anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties.
Cucumber oil is yellowish, with a light odor, a bit like cucumber oil. It is obtained by cold pressing, only the seeds of the plant are used as raw material, they contain up to 30% of the oil. Only with cold pressing can be preserved all the useful properties. Heat treatment is contraindicated.
Fatty acid composition of borago oil
Linolenic (omega 6) - 35 -40%
Gamma-linolenic (omega 6) - 25 - 40%. This acid is very important for the functioning of the stratum corneum of the skin, but it is not synthesized in the body. Gamma-linolenic acid reduces inflammation in the skin, regulates metabolism and sebum production, and reduces pigmentation.
Alpha-linolenic (omega 3) - 3%
Oleic - about 18 %
Borago oil is a light oil that absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving a greasy sheen or film, and is non-comedogenic.
Borage oil for skin
Borago oil is suitable for the care of any type of skin. However, its properties are best shown on dry, dehydrated and irritated skin. This oil is even used in the treatment of rosacea, as it can affect the synthesis of prostaglandins, which stimulate the contraction of blood vessels. This reduces inflammation and redness of the affected areas of the skin.
The main cosmetic properties of the oil:
- It can restore the lipid barrier of the skin and the protective properties of the stratum corneum.
- Actively stimulates metabolism at the cellular level and promotes cell regeneration and skin rejuvenation in general.
- Eliminates irritation and inflammation, returns the skin to a healthy appearance.
- Soothes the skin after temperature changes, stress and sun exposure.
- Restores the optimal level of skin hydration.
- Beneficial effect on skin with dermatitis, including atopic, eliminates allergic rashes, reduces lesions in dermatologic diseases.
- Regulates the production of sebum.
- Has lifting properties.
Borago oil is often used in hair cosmetics. It:
- helps restore the shine and strength of hair
- stops hair loss
- eliminates dandruff
Using the oil in cosmetic recipes, it is most often added to:
- night creams
- creams for dry skin
- creams for oily skin with acne or acne
- anti-aging formulations
- root therapy cosmetics
- in oil mixtures for stretch marks, hair, cuticles
- spot on the affected areas of the skin
- cosmetics for the scalp.
However, with all the above pluses of the oil, it has a single minus, which, however, is more than compensated by its useful properties. And this minus is its rapid oxidizability. In other words, this oil is very unstable, but the shelf life can be slightly extended if you combine it with vitamin E, rosehip or rosemary extracts, or wheat germ oil, which is rich in vitamin E. The main point of stabilizing the oils is to add antioxidants that prevent it from going rancid.
Borago or borage oil should be stored in a tightly closed dark bottle, in the refrigerator. If the package is hermetically sealed - its shelf life of 6 months. If the package is opened, the oil should be used within 1-3 months. Take this into account when you create recipes for creams with borago oil. In addition, it should not be heated above 40 degrees.
