Cetearyl alcohol in cosmetics

Cetearyl alcohol or in other words cetyl stearyl alcohol is a 50:50 combination of cetyl and stearyl alcohols. This component is of vegetable origin and acts as a co-emulsifier, viscosity regulator and structuriser for M/W emulsions. Read more about the role of fatty alcohols in cosmetics in the article `Fatty alcohols: how to make a thick cream`. If this component is not available, you can replace it with Cetearyl Alcohol from another manufacturer, or Lanette D (the same Cetearyl Alcohol, but in which the proportion of components is 30/70).

Characteristics of the component and specifics of use

INCI: Cetearyl Alcohol

CAS # 67762-27-0

HLB: 15.5

Dosage: 0.5 - 5 %

Use: add to the oil phase and heat to a temperature of about 49-56 C together with the main emulsifier.

Storage: in a cool dry place, out of direct sunlight.

Use of Lanette O for formulations

Cetyl alcohol is not an emulsifier in its own right. However, as a co-emulsifier, it can thicken creams even with a small fatty phase, creating stable emulsions. Cetearyl alcohol is able to increase the permeability of the lipid barrier to the active ingredients of the cream, acting as an enhancer. The addition of cetearyl alcohol to cream formulations creates an invisible film that prevents the skin from evaporating moisture. This property makes it a functional additive in creams for dry skin, as well as in winter cosmetics.

Co-emulsifier for the preparation of other cosmetics

Having a melting point higher than the temperature of the human body, it is successfully used in lip care products, as it increases the hardness of the product as a whole. It is used in hair products as a conditioner. It is also used in skin cleansers, increasing foaming and foam stability. It is used for all skin types, but is not recommended for use on skin prone to rosacea (pink acne), as well as sensitive and allergy-prone skin and dermatitis.

It is used in such cosmetics

  • care creams for hands
  • cosmetics for the face
  • make-up base and decorative cosmetics
  • shampoos, foams for face washing, shower gels
  • deodorants
  • hair and face masks.
