Chitosan - protective and moisturising ingredient for skin and hair
Chitosan PCA (Chitosan) is a natural polymer derived from raw materials of marine origin, chitin or the exoskeleton of molluscs. Thanks to its film-forming properties, when applied to the skin or hair, it has a protective and moisturising effect, giving the final products exceptional sensory characteristics. While PCA, or pyroglutamic acid, is the main component of the natural moisturising factor (NMF) needed to maintain the hydration of the stratum corneum. Chitosan PCA combines the positive characteristics of these two active substances in one product with a cosmetic action similar to that of hyaluronic acid.

Useful properties in cosmetics
Chitosan is a natural polymer, which is produced from raw materials of marine origin - chitin or the exoskeleton of molluscs. Applied to the skin or hair, it has a protective and moisturising effect and gives finished products exceptional sensory characteristics. Chitosan PCA, with its positive charge, interacts with the negative charge of the skin and hair, improving bio-adhesion and showing protective and moisturising characteristics.
Chitosan PCA has numerous properties: cleansing, long-lasting moisturising, restoring pH balance, protection. Moreover, Chitosan PCA can have an instant lifting effect, smooth fine lines and reduce the depth of wrinkles. Studies have shown that continuous use of cosmetics containing chitosan PCA increases skin water absorption by 140% in 8 days.
Use in hair cosmetics
Also chitosan PCA is an excellent ingredient that perfectly moisturises, has conditioning properties, covers the hair with a light protective film, smooths its structure, due to which the hairstyle will always be very neat. This is all due to the fact that chitosan itself has several times greater water-holding capacity compared to low-molecular compounds used for this purpose in the composition of hair cosmetics. The retained water increases the electrical conductivity of the hair surface, inhibits the accumulation of electrostatic charges, and the simultaneous presence of cationic groups leads to a strong effect of removing negative charges from the hair surface through neutralisation, as a result, chitosan has more pronounced antistatic properties than other surface-active substances.
Use in face and body cosmetics
Chitosan PCA moisturises our skin by adhering to skin cells, forming a thin, invisible and insensible film that provides an excellent moisture retention coating that allows the skin to breathe freely. Also, thanks to its absorption properties, the protective film extracts moisture from the environment and saturates the upper layers of the epidermis with it. It protects our skin from aggressive factors, increases its resistance to ultraviolet radiation.
