Citric acid is an acidity regulator for cosmetic products

Citric acid is a white crystalline powder without odor, but with a pronounced sour taste. This chemical substance is actively used in the food industry, medicine and cosmetic industry. Citric acid has a bleaching effect, narrows pores, but most often it is used to lower the pH of shampoos, other detergents, tonics and hair rinses.

INCI: Citric acid

Dosage: 0.2 - 3%. It is allowed to use up to 50% in special products, e.g. bath bombs.

Solubility: in water, glycerin and alcohol.

Usage: citric acid is easily soluble in water, it is used to prepare fizzy bath bombs, to improve the properties of soap from scratch, as well as to regulate the acidity of cosmetic products.

Storage: in a dry, dark place in a tightly closed container. Protect from high humidity and direct sunlight.

Citric acid in cosmetics

Most often, citric acid is used to adjust the pH level of cosmetics on a par with lactic acid. At the same time, it has conditioning properties, which are well manifested in conditioners for hair and laundry. To adjust the pH, it is better to make a 50% solution of citric acid and add it drop by drop, making measurements with a pH meter.

Also, citric acid is one of the main components for the preparation of sugar paste for depilation. No shugaring recipe can do without citric acid. It has bleaching, exfoliating properties, acts as an antioxidant and has mild preservative properties.
 

Recipe for shugaring with citric acid

• Sugar - 100 g
• Water - 40 g
• Citric acid - 20 g

Melt the sugar with water, once the sugar starts to melt, add the citric acid. When the mixture turns white, put it on low heat and stir constantly. The shugaring paste should not be covered with a lid. After 10 minutes, drop the mixture on a plate, if it does not stick to your hands, then the shugaring paste with citric acid is ready.
 

Citric acid for bath bombs

Acid is used to prepare bath bombs. Fragrant fizzy balls soften bath water, condition and tone the skin well, essential oils, fragrances, salt, milk powder can be added to them. The recipe for bath bombs is made from the calculation of 2 parts of baking soda and 1 part of citric acid. It is important that the mixture does not get water, it is usually “moisturized” with a mixture of oil and polysorbate 80. In this case, there will be no greasy spots on the walls of the bathtub. Mineral pigments or micas are used to give bombochki color, and natural essential oils or blends are used for aromatization.
 

Citric acid in soap from scratch

In handmade soap citric acid is used to give it good conditioning properties, in addition, it prevents oxidation and discoloration. It gives additional hardness. It is usually sufficient to add 1-2% citric acid and 1-3% lactic acid to soap from scratch. In this combination, the soap gets smooth, hard and well removed from the molds, easy to cut.

It is imperative to calculate the additional lye when adding citric acid. For 1 gram of citric acid you need 0.6 grams of sodium alkali. As a result of the reaction of citric acid and lye, sodium citrate is obtained, and it is it that gives the soap all the pleasant properties listed above.
