Clove essential oil is a natural antiseptic with proven effectiveness

It is obtained by steam distillation from the dried, unopened flower buds of the Syzygium aromaticum tree. Its high content of active phenolic compounds (>70% eugenol) allows it to be compared to bay essential oil (Pimenta racemosa). Among other things, clove oil is used in trichological cosmetics as a hair growth stimulant and scalp antiseptic, as well as to strengthen hair follicles and combat dandruff.

Due to the high cost of the raw material, clove leaf essential oil is often substituted. The presence of eugenyl acetate is a distinguishing feature of authenticity.

Essential oils are natural, concentrated products that are not recommended for direct application to skin or hair. The optimal dosage for clove essential oil is considered to be no more than 0.5%, or, in simple terms, up to 0.5 ml per 100 ml of the finished product. Other dosages may be used for therapeutic purposes after consultation with a specialist. Essential oils are highly soluble in any oil, emollients, alcohols, and solubilizers, but are insoluble in water. A sensitivity test is required before first use.

Storage: Sensitive to light, heat, and oxidation - store in a dark glass container, refrigerate.

Chemical composition according to chromatogram:

  • Eugenol - 78.5
  • Eugenyl acetate - 8.9
  • β-Caryophyllene - 8.8
  • Humulene - 2.59

Cosmetic and therapeutic uses of clove

Clove essential oil is valued in cosmetology for its ability to cleanse, renew, and protect the skin at the cellular level. Extensive in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate complex antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and fungicidal (Trichophyton rubrum, Candida spp, Tricophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale, Epidermophyton flocosum) activity, which is effective in formulas:

  • For problematic and oily skin - inhibits the growth of Propionibacterium acnes (Cutibacterium acnes) by disrupting the fungal cell membrane and suppressing inflammatory responses (reduces the production of proinflammatory markers IL-1β, IL-8, and TNF-α), without disturbing the skin's natural balance
  • In anti-aging creams and masks - the antioxidant properties of eugenol neutralize free radicals, protect the skin from oxidative stress, and slow down photoaging processes
  • In whitening and anti-pigmentation formulas - in vitro studies have shown that the essential oil Clove inhibits the activity of the enzyme tyrosinase, which helps even out skin tone and reduce pigmentation.
  • In aftershave or hair removal products, it has a mild antiseptic and healing effect, accelerating tissue regeneration.

Eugenol, as the main component, acts on receptors, including the pain channels TRPV1 and TRPA1, suppresses prostaglandin production (by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 enzymes), and reduces inflammation. Its mechanism of action is largely similar to that of capsaicin.

Adding clove essential oil can reduce pain sensitivity and also produce a pronounced local anesthetic effect, which has found application in local dental practice, as well as in massage mixtures (for bruises, muscle pain, etc.).

For people with weakened immune systems, as well as athletes, clove is useful in antifungal mixtures, even in the presence of yeast resistance to antifungal agents (in combination with lavender and tea tree essential oils).

Considered a highly active oil, clove is used in trace amounts of 0.1% to 0.5% of the total formula. For sensitive skin, use ≤ 0.2%.

For hair and scalp

The biochemical profile of clove essential oil makes it one of the most powerful natural remedies for strengthening hair follicles and combating dandruff. It combines well with rosemary, lavender, and peppermint oils, enhancing microcirculation and nourishing hair follicles. Key effects:

  • Hair growth stimulation. Eugenol improves scalp microcirculation, activating dormant follicles. With regular use, hair thickness and strength are observed.
  • Antibacterial and antifungal effect. Suppresses Malassezia fungus, which causes dandruff, itching, and flaking.
  • Strengthens hair structure. Due to its antioxidant effect, it protects the cuticle from damage caused by UV radiation.

Products used:

  • antiseptic/cleansing skin formulas (lotions, toners, masks, sprays)
  • creams and serums for problematic and inflammatory skin
  • in complex antioxidant formulas
  • dental products (toothpastes, rinses)
  • lip balms (in microdoses)
  • massage oils (with caution)
  • aromatherapy formulations and perfumes (in the "spice" accord)
  • scalp care (stimulating follicles and eliminating dandruff)
  • treatment of onychomycosis, "athlete's foot" (fungistatics)

Тactile and emotional associations

  • mature, sensual, and hot, like a red-hot spice in amber resin
  • dense, warm, and enveloping, yet sharp, almost piercing aroma
  • associated with winter comfort, mulled wine, and an oriental spice market
  • provides a feeling of inner warmth, energy, and vigor

Magical properties of clove

In an esoteric context, clove is the aroma of protection and willpower, purifying space and giving directed force to actions.

Clove is considered a "fiery" oil, under the protection of the Sun and Mars. It carries the energy of vitality, protection, and passion.
The aroma of cloves "awakens" the body and mind, enhances confidence, and promotes concentration during rituals of will and purification. In ritualistic practices, this oil was considered to "ignite the spark of the spirit," strengthen the aura, and protect against energy depletion.

  • Purification and protection: The smoke or aroma of cloves is used to cleanse a space of negative energies.
  • Attraction and strength: In love and money magic, a few drops of oil are applied to candles, coins, or amulets to "warm up" the intention.
  • Concentration and willpower: The scent of cloves helps to concentrate during meditations and rituals, strengthen resolve, and maintain focus on the goal.
  • Energy balance: Added to aromatic blends to balance the Manipura chakra (solar plexus), which is responsible for personal strength and action.

Clove oil in perfumery.

Clove is a full-bodied, organoleptic aroma, a classic "spice in a bottle": powerful, warming, with a characteristic aniseed-medicinal depth, yet velvety and enveloping. It is a heart note in oriental, woody-spicy, and gourmand compositions. It is widely used to scent both cosmetics and soaps.

Pairs perfectly with:

  • Citrus (bergamot, mandarin, orange, grapefruit, lemon) - for contrast and fresh balance
  • Balms and vanilla - for warmth and roundness
  • Woody: juniper, patchouli, cedar, vetiver - for depth and earthiness
  • Floral (ylang-ylang, geranium, jasmine, lavender, geranium) - for sensuality
  • Spicy essential oils (cinnamon, nutmeg, rosemary, ginger, basil) - to create a multifaceted oriental composition

Precautions

Do not use on children under 6 years of age, pregnant women (especially in the first and second trimesters), or people with sensitive skin or allergies. The oil can irritate the skin and mucous membranes, so it is used only in a highly diluted form (0.1-0.3%).

It has antiplatelet (antithrombotic) activity. Do not use if you have a bleeding disorder or are taking anticoagulants.

Causes photosensitivity!
