Cosphaderm Leo multifunctional blend: preservative and chelator in one bottle

Cosphaderm Leo is a synthetic multifunctional mixture with high antimicrobial activity against bacteria, yeasts and moulds. And the caprylhydroxamic acid included in the composition gives the mixture strong chelating properties. 

Characteristics of the component and specifics of use

INCI: Dipropylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Caprylhydroxamic Acid.

CAS: 25265-71-8, 70445-33-9, 7377-03-9.

Dosage: 2.5 - 3.0

• 2,5 % for emulsions
• 2,8 % for water-based masks
• 3.0 % for flushable cosmetics (shampoos, shower gels, etc.).

Solubility: easily soluble in water up to 2.5%, also soluble in ethanol and oils.

Usage: the component can be added to the aqueous phase and also at the end to a warm emulsion. Heating up to 80°C is permitted. The recommended pH of the finished product with this preservative is 3.0 to 8.0. 

Storage: in a dark, dry place at temperatures up to 25 °C.

Use of Cosphaderm Leo in cosmetics

Cosphaderm Leo is a non-standard preserving mixture that does not contain classical preservatives in its composition. One of the ingredients is dipropylene glycol, which acts as a solvent and increases the solubility of the mixture in water. And the ethylhexylglycerin included in the composition has two main functions in the mixture: on the one hand, it has skin conditioning properties, on the other hand its antimicrobial effectiveness helps to maintain the stability of the composition. Caprylhydroxamic acid completes the multifunctional nature of the blend thanks to its strong chelating properties.

Caprylhydroxamic acid is an important component of Cosphaderm Leo and a frequent component of many multifunctional blends. Caprylhydroxamic acid is extracted from coconut and then chemically modified. The acid is very active against yeasts, bacteria and moulds, but it also acts as a powerful chelating component. Therefore, by using this preservative in your formulas, you can avoid the use of other traditional chelators.

Ethylhexylglycerin is a monoalkyl ester of glycerin and one of the strongest green preservatives, comparable in strength to its paraben counterparts. In cosmetics, ethylhexylglycerin is recommended as a multifunctional additive, which along with its effectiveness against Gram-positive bacteria is also able to soften the skin and improve the tactile properties of cosmetics. Ethylhexylglycerin can enhance the effectiveness of traditional preservatives and act as an antimicrobial stabiliser in combination with other cosmetic ingredients. It has a deodorising effect, as it prevents the growth and reproduction of bacteria that cause the characteristic odour, but ethylhexylglycerin does not disturb the natural microflora of the skin.

Dipropylene Glycol holds the other two ingredients in solution for easy application and good water solubility. In addition to its solubilising properties, dipropylene glycol has a mild but effective antimicrobial property.
