Origin of Crambe oil and its fatty acid composition

Abyssinian mustard oil is derived from Crambe, a plant that grows in the African highlands. The fatty acid composition of Crambe oil is similar to broccoli oil, another plant of the cruciferous family popular in cosmetics, but Crambe oil is more affordable. The main acid in this oil is erucic acid, which usually contains about 60-64% and is referred to monounsaturated long-chain acids. Thanks to it, the oil is considered thermostable and can withstand prolonged heating, and as part of cosmetic products, the oil provides delicate and light textures.

Oleic acid C 18:1 - about 15%, and Linoleic acid (Omega 6) C 18:2 - about 13%. Abyssinian oil is also rich in phytosterols and tocopherol.

Brassicasterol: one of the special phytosterols in Abyssinian oil - it's believed to help reduce TEPV.

Phytosterols ≈ 0.5%. Tocopherol ≈ 0.05%

Cosmetic properties of the oil for hair

Abyssinian mustard oil has unique properties for hair: it gives them shine, but at the same time it does not weigh the hair down at all and does not leave it greasy. It is this property that determines the popularity of this oil in the recipes of indelible hair sprays, as well as natural dry oils. Just 1.5% of krambe oil in a conditioning product shows much better results of hair shine and softness than the popular argan or coconut oils.

Abyssinian oil improves the combability of hair compared to the present products in the market. Its effects make it easier to style and reduces the tendency to damage and breakage. Also, krambe oil significantly reduces the combing force even for wet hair, protecting it from breakage.

Use in skin cosmetics

Due to its fatty acid composition, krambe oil demonstrates excellent spreadability compared to other oils and emollients. That is, by adding oils to cosmetic products, you reduce their density and make them lighter. This feature is important when formulating natural blends of body and hair oils, as well as in the preparation of massage blends. The excellent sensory profile of the oil has been confirmed by a comparative study.

Based on the graph, it can be concluded that adding krambe oil to emulsions or massage mixtures can improve glide, provide a feeling of moisturization and silkiness, and enhance the absorption of the oil mixture.

When added to emulsions in amounts up to 4%, the oil acts as an emollient and conditioning agent, but does not have powerful cosmetic properties on its own.

Krambe oil as a solubilizer and dispersing agent

Abyssinian oil shows good solubilizing and dispersing properties against UV filters.

Abyssinian oil is miscible with Octocrylene, Ethylhexyl Salycilate, Homosalate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate in a 50:50 (weight/weight) ratio and is as good as C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate. Krambe oil is compatible with organic UV filters such as Octocrylene, Ethylhexyl Salycilate, Homosalate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Benzophenone-3, Butyl Methoxydibenzoyl-methane, Zinc Oxide, Triethoxycaprylsilane and others.
