Dragon's blood extract and its benefits in cosmetics
As it is popularly called “dragon's blood” is a hydroglycol extract obtained from the Croton lechleri tree (Latin name), which has numerous useful properties for skin care. Most of all, this component is loved for its effective healing, regenerating and anti-aging properties, as well as its ability to have a protective effect on the skin.
Characteristics of the component and specifics of use
INCI: Propanediol, Aqua (Water), Croton Lechleri Resin Powder.
Appearance: transparent liquid of dark red color
Concentration of active ingredient: 1.3 - 1.7%
Dosages: 3 - 5%
Solubility: in water and alcohol
Usage peculiarities: when making emulsions it is recommended to introduce the component at the final stage in the already prepared emulsion during its cooling at a temperature of 40 ° C and below. When making aqueous serums, it can be dissolved in water or in the finished gel with thorough mixing. The recommended pH of the finished product should be between 5.0 and 8.0.
Certification: Ecocert, COSMOS. The solvent used in the extract is a highly purified glycol derived from a sustainable and renewable corn sugar fermentation process. Made from 100% natural corn sugar. Contains no animal products.
Storage: in a dark, dry place and tightly closed packaging at a temperature of 15 - 25 ° C. After opening the bottle it is recommended to store in the refrigerator.
What is “dragon's blood”
First of all we would like to clarify that no dragon was harmed during the production of this extract, because Dragon's blood is a tree from the upper part of the Amazon in Peru, Ecuador and Colombia, which is also known as Sangre de Drago, Sangre de Grado, Pucure, Chojilla, Rucurana or Shamborico. The first references date back to 1600, when Spanish conquerors learned from Peruvian tribes that the latex (secretions from tree bark) of dragon's blood was excellent for healing wounds quickly.
Useful composition: the main active ingredients of the extract are
- Proanthocyanidins: polyphenols (bioflavonoids), which are powerful antioxidants that accelerate and facilitate wound healing. In vitro tests have shown them to be more effective than vitamin E, and even more effective than vitamin C.
- Taspine: an alkaloid with anti-inflammatory and healing effects that reduces the inflammation process, improving wound healing. It also stimulates fibroblast migration, also speeding up the wound healing process.
- Lignans and flavonoids: dimethylcedrusin accelerates healing fourfold, while flavonoids influence the skin's endogenous defense mechanisms, potentially modulating the response to environmental factors such as UV radiation.
Dragon's Blood extract has been shown to be a natural epigenetic ingredient capable of modulating the expression of microRNAs and participating in the aging process. Dragon's Blood also regulates the expression of genes involved in:
- cellular defense: protection against pollution
- Skin regeneration: improving barrier function
- antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action
- immunomodulatory action.
Epigenetics is a new paradigm in anti-aging science. It is the study of mechanisms involved in the regulation of gene activity: biological mechanisms that will turn genes on and off without altering their sequence. Epigenetics offers a way to influence gene function and provides a way to regulate microRNAexpression for rejuvenation. After all, this gene is involved in regulatory processes such as the cell cycle, DNA repair systems, responses to oxidative stress, apoptosis, etc.

Useful cosmetic properties and efficacy studies
- Dragon's blood causes a significant increase in the proliferation and migration of human dermal fibroblasts in an attempt to fill wounds.

- Healing: thanks to its high content of taspin and polyphenols, the extract stimulates scab formation, accelerating skin regeneration by stimulating collagen production and fibroblast migration. Inflammation is a complex chain of events that leads to the formation of deep wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, tissue inelasticity and gradual tissue damage, resulting in the degradation of collagen and elastin. Dragon's blood promotes the skin wound healing process by stimulating genes involved in the structure and healing of the epidermis: FRK, WNT and NRG4.

- Propivo-inflammatory: the extract reduces inflammation by decreasing the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

- Protection against pollution: the extract stimulates the synthesis of antioxidant defense genes such as: GPX2 (glutathione peroxidase 2), ALDH3B1, AKR1C2. These genes are involved in the detoxification of hydrocarbons.

- Immunostimulant: improves skin barrier function by stimulating the synthesis of tight junctions, key proteins in maintaining the skin's natural im

- Natural moisturizer: stimulates the synthesis of aquaporin 3 (AQP3). AQP3 functions as a water channel that facilitates the transportation of water within the cell. AQP3 deficiency in keratinocytes is known to result in increased skin dryness, decreased elasticity and delayed restoration of barrier function and wound healing.
