Natural lamellar emulsifier Emulpharma K10

EMULPHARMA K10 is a natural nonionic emulsifier for lamellar O/W emulsion, with which you can create various textures: milk, lotion, thick cream, wet wipes, deodorants. The emulsifier allows you to obtain soft and smooth products with a light velvety tint. You can often see it in European stores under the name Olive Emulsifier or Beautyderm K10.

Characteristics of the component and features of use

INCI: Cetearyl Glucoside, Sorbitan Olivate, Cetearyl Alcohol.

Origin: olive and palm oil

Type: O/W

HLB: 9.5

Appearance: White to ivory flakes.

Dosage (percentage of input into cosmetics): 3 - 7%. We indicate recommended dosages of input, however, the optimal dosage for your formulation must be chosen independently, depending on the full composition of the cosmetic product, as well as the presence of additional thickeners and stabilizers in the formula:

3-5% - allows you to emulsify up to 30% of oils, but the emulsion will not be stable without the addition of rheology modifiers (thickeners),
7% - allows you to emulsify up to 30% of oils, the emulsion will be stable without additional components.
Solubility: in oil at 57-67°C.

Use: It is recommended to add to the oil phase at temperatures up to 80°C and then mix with the aqueous phase. The technology also makes it possible to prepare an emulsion “in one glass,” when oil, water and an emulsifier are heated together in a water base and then emulsified. The recommended pH level of the finished product is 4.0 - 8.0. To improve emulsion stability, add thickeners to the aqueous phase or fatty alcohols to the fatty phase.

Certification: COSMOS, ECOCERT, HALAL, does not contain genetically modified organisms, suitable for vegans: no raw materials of animal origin are included or used directly or indirectly in all production processes,

Storage: at temperatures between 5 and 35°C, away from direct light.

Liquid crystal emulsions: application in cosmetics

Emulpharma K10 is an O/W emulsifier, does not contain PEGs and is a self-emulsifying base for creating pleasant, velvety emulsions. It forms stable liquid crystal structures, reduces transepidermal water loss and gives the skin a feeling of lightness. Many studies have shown how many benefits liquid crystal emulsions have, as they improve formulations in several aspects: increased water retention in the stratum corneum of the skin, which increases hydration, increased viscosity due to molecular reorganization, increased permeability and prolonged release of biologically active substances.

The base emulsion on Emulpharma K10 is analyzed through a microscope 24 hours after its initial preparation. This analysis shows the formation of liquid crystals.

The emulsifier creates stable emulsions and allows up to 30% oils to be added to formulas, but it retains its stability provided that the emulsifier is added in an amount of 7%. If a formula uses 3 or 5% emulsifier, the manufacturer recommends supplementing the formulas with gelling agents, fatty alcohols, or co-emulsifiers. Below you can see examples of testing the stability of different emulsions.

  1. Application of 3% Emulpharma K10 and 0.5%, 1% and 2% of various structurants. The test result shows that 3% emulsifier requires the addition of no less than 2% structure formers, while the addition of Cetearyl Alcohol did not show stability
  2. Application of 5% Emulpharma K10 and 0.2% of various rheology modifiers (HEC, xanthan gum, guar gum). The test result shows that all emulsions will be stable if you add gelling agents to cold water, warm both phases and then start the emulsification process

Conditions for creating an emulsion based on the Emulpharma K10 emulsifier

Emulpharma K10 can be added to the oil or aqueous phase. In the case of the traditional approach, it is recommended to add an emulsifier to the oil phase. The oil and water phases are then heated separately to 75-80°C, after which the oil phase is slowly added to the water phase. It is also possible to create a "one cup" emulsion, where the water, oil phase and emulsifier are added to 1 cup, heated and then emulsified.

It is important to take into account the fact that the viscosity of the emulsion increases and can increase in a period of up to 1 week, so make test samples and check the final viscosity only over time.

The viscosity of the emulsion increases in direct proportion to the amount of fat phase, however testing has shown that castor oil can cause emulsion instability. The different content of oils and emollients in the oil phase also affects the viscosity of the emulsion.
