Conditioning emulsifier Behentrimonium Methosulfate for hair

Genamin BTMS is a safe, effective and widely used conditioning component. It is Behentrimonium Methosulfate that is a component of the well-known mixed emulsifier BTMS, which consists of 25% Behentrimonium Methosulfate and 75% Cetearyl alcohol. And if suddenly BTMS disappeared from sale - then you can replace it with a combination of Genamin BTMS and cetearyl alcohol. Genamin BTMS provides hair with softness, natural feel, excellent combing properties and an excellent softening effect for thick and hard-to-manage hair.

Characteristics and description of the component

INCI: Behentrimonium Methosulfate

pH (1% solution): 7.0 - 9.0

Type: cationic emulsifier

Dosage: 0.5 - 2%

Solubility: in water at a temperature of 55-60 ° C

Use: Genamin BTMS can be used in combination with other cationic surfactants, it is compatible with non-ionic surfactants. To obtain a thicker and more viscous emulsion, it is recommended to combine with cetearyl alcohol.

Certification: Halal, Vegan, Whole Foods Baseline, EWG, Registration China

Storage: in a dark, dry place, protect from direct sunlight and avoid temperatures above 40 ° C.

Application of the cationic emulsifier

Genamin BTMS (Behentrimonium Methosulfate) is used as an active ingredient mainly in hair conditioners and hair repair products (masks). The concentration of the emulsifier depends on the hair type: the more damaged the hair, the more Genamin BTMS should be used in the formula to achieve the best effect.

Other possible applications of Behentrimonium Methosulfate are the production of antistatic permanent wave fixatives, hair lotions, shampoos and styling creams. As a cationic substance, Genamin BTMS is adsorbed on the negatively charged surface of the hair, leaving no visible film. The co-emulsifier provides an excellent softening effect for thick and hard-to-manage hair. The antistatic effect of Genamin BTMS should also be noted. But remember, this emulsifier alone cannot create a thick emulsion, for this you need to use cetearyl alcohol, Lanette O or Lanette D in combination with it.

Cosmetic properties

Genamin BTMS is adsorbed on hair from aqueous and alcohol solutions, as well as from emulsions (dispersions) in combination with other additives, such as film formers and oils. Due to this, surface resistance is reduced when combing and, as a result, much less hair is damaged and falls out. Hair damaged by bleaching, permanent curling or excessive degreasing is prone to loss of shine and luster. Genamin BTMS, used in cream hair care products, significantly improves the ability of wet hair to be easily combed and significantly improves the condition of the hair.

Compatibility with other components

Genamin BTMS can be used in combination with other cationic surfactants to provide a super easy combing effect on wet and dry hair. The co-emulsifier is compatible with non-ionic surfactants. Reacts with anionic surfactants to form electroneutral salts; most of them are poorly soluble in water, but stable solutions can be obtained using an excess of the anionic compound.

No signs of incompatibility were observed with mixtures consisting of Genamin BTMS and commercial film formers such as polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVA and PVP/VA.

How to replace the mixed emulsifier BTMS

We would like to repeat once again that Genamin BTMS is not a full-fledged replacement for the well-known mixed cationic emulsifier BTMS, because the latter consists of 75% cetearyl alcohol and 25% cationic component Behentrimonium Methosulfate and it is recommended to introduce it into the formulations from 1 to 5%. Therefore, if we want to replace the cationic emulsifier BTMS, we need to apply the following calculations:

  • 1% BTMS = 0.25% Genamin BTMS + 0.75% cetearyl alcohol
  • 2% BTMS = 0.5% Genamin BTMS + 1.5% cetearyl alcohol
  • 3% BTMS = 0.75% Genamin BTMS + 2.25% cetearyl alcohol
  • 4% BTMS = 1% Genamin BTMS + 3% cetearyl alcohol
  • 5% BTMS = 1.25% Genamin BTMS + 3.75% cetearyl alcohol.

That is, with this calculation, the proportion of 1:3 is preserved, but this is not the only correct option for using Genamin BTMS. As mentioned above, you can introduce it into recipes up to 2%, combining the emulsifier with fatty alcohols or other hair emulsifiers.

Advantages of using in hair formulas

  • Increased shine and radiance
  • Good antistatic effect
  • Good softening effect
  • Good wet combing
  • Hair volume booster.
