A Natural Cationic Smoothing Ingredient

Greenquat BT is a patented, 100% plant-based betaine copolymer with a highly cationic charge, derived from sugar beets. It acts as a gentle replacement for synthetic conditioning ingredients (ammonium chloride derivatives, hydroxypropyltrimonium, silicone derivatives, and polyquaternium) commonly used in hair care products. Greenquat BT provides superior moisturizing and smoothing effects, and can even improve the quality of lather, making it creamier, softer, and shinier. Greenquat BT is an ideal solution for both skin and hair care for children; it is extremely gentle and lacks the typical unpleasant amine odor.

The Nature of Betaine and Its Beneficial Cosmetic Properties for Skin and Hair

Betaine, or trimethylglycine, is a molecule commonly found in nature. It is a byproduct purified from sugar beet molasses during the sugar production process, making it an ingredient that meets natural and organic certification standards. It is non-toxic, non-sensitizing, and non-irritating.

Betaine's use in cosmetics is due to its multifunctional properties and ability to improve the compatibility of surfactant mixtures with the skin, as well as other properties: water retention, soothing and decongestant effects, stabilization of emulsion interfaces, and improved sensory characteristics.

Betaine has been shown to be present in hair and perform an important protective function (Pulliainen K, et al., 2009). Chemical treatments such as bleaching, perming, and straightening cause hair damage, and betaine may act as a protective mechanism. In fact, a research report by Hazel Pool Associates demonstrated that treating hair with a 5% betaine solution improves hair strength, maintains initial resistance to shrinkage for a longer period, and reduces breakage.

Greenquat BT Applications in Cosmetics

Greenquat BT is a patented, 100% plant-derived copolymer of highly cationic betaine. It can effectively replace synthetic conditioning ingredients (e.g., ammonium chloride derivatives, hydroxypropyltrimonium, silicone derivatives, and polyquaternium) commonly used in hair care products.

Greenquat BT is specifically formulated to improve compatibility and clarity in anionic surfactant systems, providing superior hydration, smoothing, and improved lather quality, making it creamier, softer, and shinier. The polymer is suitable for rinse-off and leave-in hair care products, such as shampoos, conditioners, cleansing lotions, hair masks, and serums. It is also recommended for body care due to the velvety feel typical of cationic products. Acetic acid, a component of this product, was selected for its positive conditioning effect, improving combability and softness. Acetic acid gives Greenquat BT its characteristic vinegar-like odor, but this odor is detectable in the finished product.

The effectiveness of Greenquat BT cationic conditioner

4% Greenquat BT in a rinse-out aqueous solution significantly improves dry combability (-17% combing effort, p=0.0314) and reduces electrostatic charge (-50%, p<0.0001) in twice-bleached hair, achieving comparable and even better results than Polyquaternium-7.

Comparison of the effectiveness of Greenquat BT and a shampoo containing silicones

Below you can see two shampoo formulas, one of which contains polyquaternium and silk guar as cationic ingredients, as well as amodimethinone. The second formula contains Greenquat BT only.

Greenquat BT provides conditioning and hydration to damaged hair. This component demonstrates disciplined effectiveness on both straight and wavy hair. Hair becomes noticeably smoother, more hydrated, and healthier. Frizz and frizz are significantly smoothed.

The Effect of Greenquat BT on the Intensity of Color-Treated Hair

Below you can see two shampoo formulas, one containing 4% Greenquat BT, and the other containing 1% Greenquat BT.

which contains synthetic conditioner.

The graph below shows the color intensity of RED RUBINE depending on rinsing. When using a shampoo-conditioner containing Greenquat BT, the color intensity remains unchanged even after ten rinses, while the color intensity decreases sharply when using a commercial shampoo with synthetic conditioner. Vibrance was measured with a KONIKA MINOLTA colorimeter with a CM3700d reading.

Antimicrobial Activity and Antidandruff Effect

Greenquat BT exhibits bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against Malassezia Furfur, Propionibacterium Acnes, and Staphylococcus Epidermidis, the three most common skin strains that cause dandruff. A similar effect was demonstrated against some Gram-positive (Escherichia Coli – Pseudomonas Aeruginosa) and Gram- (Staphylococcus Aureus – Staphylococcus Epidermidis) bacteria, as well as some yeasts and molds (Candida Albicans and Aspergillus Brasiliensis).

Safety for People and the Environment

  1. Based on the results of the HRIPT (Repeated Patch Test) and the skin irritation potential of a 3D reconstructed human epidermis (RHE, SkinEthic), Greenquat BT demonstrated a lack of irritation, allergy, and cytotoxicity.
  2. Greenquat BT was shown to be non-mutagenic for tested Salmonella Typhimurium strains, both with and without metabolic activation.
  3. A study conducted on Desmodesmus Subspicatus showed that Greenquat BT did not affect the growth or appearance of algae. Furthermore, Greenquat BT does not exhibit acute toxicity to Daphnia magna, making it safe for aquatic environments.
  4. Greenquat BT can be considered "readily biodegradable" according to OECD test 301F. Greenquat BT achieved 100% biodegradability within 28 days.
