Menthol and its use in cosmetics

INCI: Menthol

Other names: Menthol crystals, Menthol flakes, Levo-Menthol, Hexa Hydro Thymol, Cyclohexanol.

Dosage: 0.1-5%, allowed up to 10% in specialized products.

Solubility: in oil, melting point 43 °C. Also soluble in alcohol, ether, acetic acid. Can be heated up to 70 °С.

Storage: long-term storage is recommended in a dark place at temperatures up to 25 °C, protect from direct sunlight. Temporary transportation at a different temperature is allowed.

Cosmetic properties

Crystal menthol has a fresh, distinctive, cooling odor that is probably familiar to everyone. It is colorless crystals with a strong peppermint odor and a cooling taste. The main source is peppermint oil (Mentha arvensis). Crystalline menthol is often a component of various medicines. • Mouthwash sprays: up to 0.3%
• Mouthwashes: up to 2.0%.
   

Precautions 

The substance is toxic - do not swallow! If swallowed - a dose of 2 g may be fatal
In contact with skin - may cause allergic reactions. 
Do not use in the first 4 months of pregnancy.
