Mentyl lactate and its use in cosmetics
Mentyl lactate is an ester of menthol and lactic acid, which is a cooling agent in skin, hair and oral care products. Menthol derivative gives a long-lasting cooling effect, but at the same time acts much milder than menthol itself, and is more compatible with the skin and has practically no irritating effect.
Characteristics of the component and specifics of use
INCI: Menthyl lactate
Dosage (percentage of input into cosmetics): 0.1 - 5%, in some products even up to 10%. But the standard dosage in care products is usually 0.1 - 2%. Do not use undiluted on the skin.
Solubility: in oils, alcohols and glycols. Heat resistant and heating is permitted. Solubility improves when heated up to 50 °C.
Usage: it is recommended to adhere to a pH of 3.5 or higher in finished products with this component. At a pH below 3.5 menthyl lactate increases sun sensitivity.
Storage: it is recommended to store in a dark place at a temperature up to 25°C, protected from direct sunlight.
Benefits and uses of Menthyl lactate
As we mentioned earlier, menthyl lactate is used as a cooling and soothing agent in a large number of cosmetics and therapeutic products, replacing menthol, camphor or peppermint, which can be more irritating to the skin. In the combination of menthol with lactic acid, the irritating characteristics of the component are minimized. The cooling effect of mentyl lactate is much more pronounced than that of menthol, and also mentyl lactate does not have a characteristic minty odor, which allows it to be included in a variety of cosmetic products for face and body. It can also be used as a moisturizing and whitening component.

- cosmetics for swelling, including under the eyes
- shampoos and conditioners
- foot care, including for varicose veins
- toning cosmetics, including active masks for a fresh look
