Modukine as an active for very dry, sensitive and atopic skin
Modukine is an active ingredient derived from milk that is specially formulated for effective regenerating care for sensitive, dry and problematic skin. It is intended for any skin type with chronic and pronounced inflammation (couperosis, atopic, very dry skin). Modukine acts as an extremely powerful modifier of the biological response of cells. It reduces inflammation in the skin at the cellular level and helps to restore the skin barrier and normal skin functionality.
Modukine is no longer expected to be available due to the tripling of the purchase price of the component in 2022!
Component Characteristics and Usage Specifics
INCI: Lactose, Milk Protein
Appearance: white fine powder with no distinctive odor
Dosage (percentage of input into cosmetics): 0.5 %, i.e. for a cream weighing 50 g you need only 0.25 g of the active.
Solubility: in water at a temperature not exceeding 40 °C.
Usage: optimal solubility of Modukine is achieved in the pH range of 6 to 7 in water at temperatures below 40 °C. Higher temperatures may reduce the activity of the ingredient. It is recommended to avoid alkaline values of finished cosmetics with Modukine.
Certification: NATRUE-certified
Storage: long-term storage is recommended in a dark, dry place at a temperature between 10-25 °C. Protect from direct sunlight and moisture. Temporary transportation at a different temperature is permitted.
Modukine and its use in cosmetics
Modukine is an active ingredient derived from milk, which contains biologically active polypeptides stabilized by a special manufacturing process. Modukine is presented as a 100% concentrated dry powder, so it is very economical to use, stable during storage and does not require additional preservation.
A special development of the German company CLR - Modukin - is used in cosmetics for effective regenerating care. This active is included in formulations designed for any skin type with chronic and pronounced inflammation: dryness, atopic dermatitis, hypersensitivity, problem skin.
Modukine acts as an extremely powerful modifier of the biological response of cells. It strongly reduces inflammation in the skin at the cellular level, helps restore the skin barrier and normal skin functionality, reduces transepidermal moisture loss and increases overall skin hydration.
Ingredient efficacy (In vitro)
Reduction of IL-8 expression in human keratinocytes
Decreased secretion of IL-8 by human lymphocytes
In vivo testing was also conducted by the company manufacturing the active ingredient on healthy and atopic skin on which an inflammatory response was stimulated.
Skin itch reduction test
Itch level was measured in points on a scale of up to 4. 10 mg/mL histamine hydrochloride was applied to the healthy skin of 5 volunteers (age: 18-50 years). The treated area was punctured with a lancet. After that, placebo and cream formulations containing 0.5% Modukine were applied, then the degree of itch score was recorded every 0.5 hours. As can be seen from the graph, Modukine showed significant efficacy and after 1.5 hours the subjects felt no discomfort and itching.
Testing transepidermal moisture loss (TEWL) on atopic skin
The effect of the tested creams on TEWL after application twice daily to selected eczema areas in 20 volunteers (age range: 20-54 years) suffering from dry seborrheic skin. Measurements were performed using a Tewameter. TEWL [g/hm2]. As can be seen from the graph, TEWL decreased by 50% after 28 days of application of the cream containing 0.5% Modukine.
Increase in skin moisturization
Skin hydration was determined on 20 volunteers (age 20 to 54 years) with dry seborrheic skin. The measurements were performed using a Corneometer. The increase in skin hydration was measured in %. As can be seen from the graph, the skin hydration level increased by almost 45% after 28 days of application of the cream containing 0.5% Modukine.
Reduction of skin redness
Skin redness was determined by chromometry in 20 volunteers (age range: 20-54 years) suffering from dry seborrhea. As can be seen from the graph, the level of skin redness was almost halved after 28 days of application of the cream containing 0.5% Modukine. This testing confirms the effectiveness of Modukine in cosmetics against couperosis and rosacea, in cosmetics after sunburn, in soothing and anti-inflammatory products, in cosmetics after irritating cosmetic procedures and peels.
Main cosmetic properties
Summarizing all the above tests, we can say that Modukine performs the following cosmetic tasks:
- Anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the mediator IL-8

- Restoration of the lipid barrier
- Normalization of TEWL and skin hydration levels
