Cosmetic properties and application of neem powder (margosa)

Neem powder, obtained from dried and crushed leaves of the Azadirachta indica tree, is used in cosmetics as a natural component with pronounced antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects. The chemical composition of the leaves includes bioactive compounds such as nimbin, azadirachtin, margosin, quercetin and salicylamide. These substances have a complex effect on the skin and hair.

The main property of neem powder is antibacterial. In vitro, neem extracts demonstrate an inhibitory effect on the growth of Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus and yeast fungi of the genus Candida. This allows the component to be used in products designed to care for oily, inflamed and acne-prone skin.

The powder has a soft drying and sebum-regulating effect, normalizing sebum production and narrowing pores. It is especially effective when used in cleansing masks and pastes, as the powder has light adsorbing properties and helps remove excess sebum and impurities.

The anti-inflammatory effect of the powder is associated with the suppression of the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and a decrease in the activity of oxidative stress, which makes it suitable for inclusion in cosmetics for seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis and insect bites.

An additional property is antifungal. The leaves contain terpenoids that have a fungistatic effect. This allows the use of neem powder in products against dandruff, foot mycosis and scalp inflammation.

The powder can be used in solid soap and beldi, washing powders (ubtans), masks, scrubs, dry shampoos, etc.

Compatibility with other components is good, especially with green tea hydrolates, aloe vera, tea tree and lavender essential oils. Combined use with zinc and sulfur enhances the antiseptic and drying effect.

Limitations are associated with possible individual sensitivity and a specific odor characteristic of them.
