Nuances of making palm candles

How to choose a wick

Considering the higher viscosity of palm wax compared to soy wax, it's better to use "heavy" wicks, tightly woven pure cotton, or stiffer composite wicks (cotton with woven paper thread).

Wick size depends on the diameter of the candle: the wider the mold, the thicker (with more threads) the wick needed. Too thin - the candle may sink in the wax and "tunnel" (burn in the center, leaving unlit wax around the edges). Too thick - smoke, leaks, and increased wax consumption.

For a large diameter, you can use several thin wicks. For example, a thin wick creates a melt pool of 45-60 mm (it's important to test beforehand!); therefore, for a candle with a diameter of 110-120 mm, two or three wicks (installed symmetrically around the center) are suitable. These wicks, when burning simultaneously, will allow the candle to melt around the entire perimeter.

If you plan to use wooden wicks, be sure to test them first, as their combustion characteristics make them unsuitable for high-melting palm waxes.

When making container candles, it's important to remember that palm waxes prefer thick-walled molds (glass or concrete). The higher the heat capacity of the mold, the larger (more powerful) the wick must be for the candle to burn properly.
 

How much fragrance should I add to my candles?

The optimal range is approximately 6-9% fragrance oil by weight of the wax.

Fragrances increase viscosity/foaming/flash point and usually require a larger wick.
Adding too much can cause defects: oils may separate (called "bleeding"), the scent may not adhere properly, and burning may be poor. Too little fragrance will result in a weak scent. Also consider the flash point of the fragrance itself—high-flash point fragrances are suitable for dense palm wax.
 

Pouring Temperature for Palm Candles

To achieve the characteristic visual effect (frosting, crystallization), it's important to pour the wax at a relatively hot temperature (80-95°C – this range ensures sufficient molecular mobility and controlled crystal formation), and then ensure slow, uniform cooling.

In simple terms, crystals "grow" and need time to form. To achieve beautiful crystals, optimal growth conditions must be created.

These are the right conditions:

  • temperature of the mixture
  • pouring into heated molds
  • slow cooling without drafts or temperature fluctuations

Why is this important?

Crystal formation occurs in two stages: nucleation and subsequent growth. When poured at the optimal temperature, wax molecules are more mobile; when passing through the "supercooling zone," optimal nuclei are formed, which then develop into uniform crystalline structures.

Thus, by adjusting the temperature of the candle mass and its subsequent cooling, you can achieve different designs with the same wax.
 

Problems with Pouring Palm Wax

Pouring too hot:

  • Possible loss of highly volatile aromatic oil compounds, altering the final aroma
  • "Bleeding" of oil droplets on the surface
  • Shrinkage - dips, cracks, cavities

Pouring too cold (high mass viscosity):

  • Poor shape detail, foaming, streaks, unevenness, and air pockets
  • Rapid localized nucleation on the contact surface - resulting in a fine, dull matte texture with few crystals
     

Candle Maturation and Care

After making, it's highly recommended to allow candles to "mature" for a period of time. During this time, the crystal lattice stabilizes and becomes denser, the aromatic molecules are properly integrated into the wax, and the wick's capillary conductivity evens out. This ensures optimal results when using candles: a clean, bright flame and even aroma diffusion without splashes. For palm candles, this period is 4-5 days.

The first time, it's recommended to allow the candle to burn down until the entire top layer melts—this helps prevent tunneling later. This typically requires 2-4 hours of continuous burning. The wick should be trimmed to approximately 5-10 mm, ensuring that no dirt or wick debris gets into the melted wax.
