Papain and its use in cosmetics

Papain is a dry powder of plant origin, which is obtained from papaya. It is widely used in cosmetology as a component for enzymatic peeling, in products to slow hair growth, in toothpastes and skin care.

Odor: Strong, characteristic of the product, not perceptible in the finished product.

Enzymatic activity: 50,000 u/g
Dosage: 1 - 7 % (do not exceed the dosage!)

Usage: soluble in water at temperatures not exceeding 50-60 °C. The working pH ranges from 3.0 to 12.0, but it is recommended to keep the acidity around 5.0 for the highest stability of the component in the finished product.

Storage: in a dark, cool, dry place in tightly closed packaging at 2-25 °C. Protect from moisture.

Cosmetic properties in recipes

Papain is a plant proteolytic enzyme found in large quantities in the immature fruit of the papaya tree. It is standardized by units of enzyme activity and can be introduced into cosmetics in different dosages according to the activity of the specific papain species.

The main actions of the enzyme in cosmetics

• has a keratolytic effect and provides a gentle and deep cleansing of the skin
• thanks to the enzyme nature, brightens the skin and smoothing the relief
• stimulates cell renewal and regeneration
• affects the hair follicle, partially destroying it, thinning the hair
• exfoliates, removing keratinized particles and prepares the skin for further procedures
• increases microcirculation, smooths relief, improves complexion, does not damage the skin, does not scratch like physical abrasives
• is not affected by sun exposure. While most acid and retinol peels are not available during spring and summer, enzymatic peels can be used on any skin, including sensitive and couperose skin.

Use of papain extract in formulas

• mild peels and exfoliants
• gels-exfoliants, skin cleansers (provides gentle but deep cleansing, removing keratinized scales, stimulating skin regeneration and renewal)
• means for deep cleansing of the skin before cosmetic procedures (improves the bioavailability of creams, gels, including when using hardware technology. Significantly increases the effectiveness of the use of cosmetic products of subsequent care)
• depilation products
• products for oily skin
• enzymatic peels (due to the property of protease to destroy keratin, such peels remove unwanted hair, as well as inhibit the growth of new hair. They are indicated after depilations, shugaring, etc.)
• removal of age spots and freckles.

Papain extract is often used in toothpastes, in which it can gently and effectively clean teeth and gums from food debris and plaque, prevent staining of teeth and delicately whiten them, as well as improve oral hygiene. If the recommended dosage is used, it does not affect the taste and odor of the final product.

How to make a recipe with papain

As we mentioned earlier, the dosage of papain in a cosmetic depends on its activity as well as the type of cosmetic product itself. We give you approximate dosages for using papaya extract in different types of natural cosmetics, but take into account the factor of different skin sensitivities. Before applying cosmetics with papain, you should definitely perform a sensitivity test on a small area of skin. It is advisable to start using papain in recipes with the minimum dosage, gradually increasing it as needed.

• in brightening indelible products - no more than 1%
• in cosmetics to slow hair growth - up to 2.5
• in toothpastes - 2%
• in enzyme peelings - from 1 to 7% (* sensitivity test).

In case of long-term use of products with papain in the quality of cosmetics for hair growth retardation it is recommended to reduce the dosage with continuous use to avoid skin irritation.
