Properties and use in cosmetic formulas

PEG-40 is derived from castor oil and is used as a reservoir for active ingredients as it tends to gradually release its contents. The oil has a thicker consistency, a higher melting point and a higher degree of purification than castor oil. This is especially valuable for lipsticks and other cosmetics where a temperature resistant fatty phase is required. Stabilises emulsions well.

It retains all the properties of castor oil, such as

  • softens and moisturises the skin,
  • forms a protective film on the skin,
  • preventing excessive evaporation of moisture,
  • good solvent for creating transparent liquid cosmetics,
  • excellent solubiliser for fragrances, essential oils, oil substances,
  • excellent dispersing agent for hard soluble components such as salicylic acid or ferulic acid,
  • excellent viscosity modifier
  • does not leave an oily residue on the skin, easily absorbed.

Use in recipes

  • oil-free cosmetic products
  • make-up removers
  • cream products for face and body skin care
  • water tonics,
  • sprays with oil-soluble substances (essential oils, fragrances)
  • cosmetic products for hygiene, including lubricant gels
  • rinse-off and rinse-on hair products
  • masks, shampoos, conditioners, styling sprays
  • alcohol-free deodorants.

The introduction of hydrogenated castor oil into the formulation makes it possible to make transparent or slightly opalescent solutions without the addition of fatty oils.

The method of introduction into the formulas

  1. For dissolving (solubilising) perfumes and essential oils requires 20% of the perfume (essential oil) and 80% of PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, after mixing, water can be added. In this case no heating of PEG-40 is required to dissolve (solubilise).
  2. Oil substances requires 10-20% oil and 80-90% PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil. This is done by preheating 80% PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil to 70 °C and introducing the oils, then slowly adding water while stirring.

Cosmetic concentrations range from 2 to 90% ( depending on the type of cosmetic):

  • tonics/lotions up to 6%;
  • bath pralines up to 25%;
  • hydrophilic oils up to 35%.
