Pentylene glycol is a humectant, stabilizer and solubilizer for cosmetics

What is Pentylene glycol? Pentylene glycol natural is a natural analog of propylene glycol, but it is made not from petroleum products, but from natural vegetable raw materials. Corn is used for its production. Pentylene glycol enhances moisturizing properties of cosmetics, antimicrobial properties of preservatives, and also serves as a solvent for lipophilic (fat-soluble) components and stabilizes the emulsion. The active is approved by ECOCERT and COSMOS. It belongs to biodegradable components. It can be used in cosmetics labeled ECO and VEGAN.

Characteristics of the component and peculiarities of use

INCI: Pentylene glycol

Other name: Pentiol

Chemical name: 1,2 Pentanediol

Dosage: 0.5 - 5%

Usage: dissolve in water and oil, so it can be introduced into the aqueous phase of the product, the fatty phase, and the warm emulsion. It also serves as a solubilizer for lipophilic components.

Features: does not contain preservatives, antioxidants, fragrances, colorants, etc. Not tested on animals.

Certification: Ecocert and Cosmos.

Storage: in a dry, dark place in a tightly closed container. Protect from direct sunlight, high humidity and heat.

Properties of pentylene glycol in cosmetics

Pentylene glycol enhances the action of moisturizing assets. It is part of a group of multifunctional glycols and contains two alcoholic OH groups and a short carbon chain, so it is well soluble in water. It is able to attract moisture and provide additional hydration to the skin and hair, and it also has emollient properties. According to studies, just 2% of pentylene glycol increases the moisturizing functions of a cream by 25%. Pentylene glycol is comparable to glycerin in its moisturizing properties

Pentylene glycol stabilizes the emulsion and improves its sensory properties. This active is able to reduce the particle size by up to 60%, which increases the stability of the system. Plus, it significantly improves the tactile feel of creams and other cosmetics and reduces the sticky and greasy feeling of the cream.

Another cool property of Pentylene Glycol is that it enhances the action of preservatives. It can increase the antimicrobial activity of preserving agents, so, when making a recipe for cream with pentylene glycol, you can reduce the percentage of preservative. But it should be borne in mind that it is not very effective against the mold fungus A. brasiliensis. You can take note that such antimicrobial properties of pentylene glycol make it a good asset for inflamed skin with rashes and acne. It is used as a preservative at a concentration of at least 5%.

Solvent for oily actives. Pentylene glycol allows the introduction of lipophilic assets into oil-free cosmetics: tonics, lotions, serums and micellar water. It can be used either in mono version or in combination with other solvents (in this case they should be taken half as much).

Recommended dosage of pentylene glycol and method of administration:

Pentylene glycol is a thermostable component. It can be injected

  • in the aqueous phase of the product
  • at the end of preparation
  • as a solvent: first mix with fat-soluble actives and then add the mixture at the end of preparation.

Input percentage:

  • when used as a preservative without additional preserving agents - 5 %
  • in any cosmetic products to enhance moisturizing properties, as enhancer and booster - 2 %
  • for dissolving fat-soluble components 1:1

Safety of Pentylene glycol in cosmetics formulation

Pentylene glycol has a low irritant potential and its ability to integrate into the lipid layer of the skin is rated as low. In addition, it is chemically inert. There are studies that pentylene glycol reduces skin sensitivity and may prevent contact dermatitis.  So unlike its synthetic counterpart, propylene glycol, it is more environmentally friendly and safe.
