Phytostecol - plant phytosterols in cosmetics
Phytostecol (encapsulated form) is a dual-action component - delivery capsule and phytosterol β-sitosterol. It is an innovative plant-based active that restores the skin's barrier function, rejuvenates the skin and promotes proper moisturisation. It has the same structure as cholesterol, which is part of cell membranes. And the particle size and surface charge density are optimal for the skin.
This ingredient has been discontinued and is not expected to be available for sale.

What is cholesterol and what functions it fulfils in the skin
Cholesterol is a scary word that is usually associated with obesity and health problems. But when it comes to cholesterol and skin - your associations should be quite different. Cholesterol is an organic lipid that is found in every cell in our body. From a cosmetic point of view, cholesterol has a barrier function and is responsible for cell permeability. It is part of the stratum corneum and enhances its ability to retain moisture. The lower the cholesterol level, the weaker the skin's protective barrier and the greater the skin's dryness.

As an alternative to cholesterol, plant sterols are used in the cosmetic industry. Their molecules have the same structural properties as cholesterol molecules. Therefore, phytosterols are able to mimic the functions of cholesterol in the skin. Their powerful beneficial effects on the skin in cosmetic creams are as good as peptides.
Phytosterols are in line with the principles of root-cosmetics, as they are the most physiological and repeat the structural components of the skin. Therefore, they easily penetrate the stratum corneum and are incorporated into the epidermis.
Phytosterols are used in such cosmetics formulations
- in products for ageing, mature or very dry skin, as they restore skin elasticity and help moisture penetration.
- in scalp masks and shampoos, as an additive that restores the lipid layer, eliminates dryness and flaking. in sunscreen creams,
- as an additional component that protects against sun exposure
- in cosmetic creams for acne and post-acne skin,
- as an active that restores the skin's defence functions.
- in after-sun products as a soothing additive. When phytosterols are added to such products, a more pronounced expression of genes encoding type I collagen synthesis - COLIA1 and COLIA2 - is observed.
The main active component of phytosterols is β-sitosterol. It is derived from non-GMO soya (conforms to ISO 16128). Phosphotidylinositol is used as the base of the capsule and ascorbyl palmitate acts as an antioxidant supplement.
Phytostecol has the following cosmetic effects
- Natural protective factor against UV radiation
- Prevents age-related skin pigmentation and evens out the complexion as it reduces melatogenesis
- Promotes general skin rejuvenation Restores the lipid barrier and protects against environmental influences
- Promotes active penetration of moisturising additives into the skin
- Prevents destruction of fibres and proteoglycans in the dermis, stimulates cell division.
- Has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect, quickly eliminates itching and heals skin damage.
- Stimulates the production of collagen and elastin.
The barrier function and moisturisation are restored to 100% as soon as 7 days after use.
