Cosgard is a liquid preservative with a broad spectrum of action with Ecocert certification

Cosgard is a well-known broad-spectrum preservative with antifungal and antibacterial activity, produced by the Spanish company Chemipol under the trade name Sensicare 3000. This ingredient is used as a mono preservative, has no distinctive odour or colour and does not change the appearance of the final product. It is one of the few preservatives approved by Ecocert, Cosmos, which has Vegan status and does not contain GMO.

Component characteristics and usage

INCI: Benzyl alcohol, Dehydroacetic acid, Aqua

Dosage: 0,7 - 1,1 %

Solubility: completely and easily soluble in alcohol, glycols and other solvents, partially soluble in water (i.e. you can dissolve the preservative in a large amount of water, but partial insolubility in an oily amount of water is possible).

Usage: the preservative is compatible with most raw materials used in the formulation of personal care and cosmetic products. It is stable over a pH range of 3 to 6 and temperatures up to 80 °C. It is recommended to be added early in the production process to ensure proper distribution of the preservative throughout the system. When formulating, take into account the fact that a 1% solution of preservative has a pH of 3.0 to 4.0, i.e. it can understand the acidity of the overall cosmetic formula.

Storage: in a dark, dry place at temperatures from 0 to 35 °C.

Cosgard preservative use in cosmetics

Cosgard preservative is based on dehydroacetic acid (DHA) and benzyl alcohol and is therefore approved for use in a wide range of cosmetics, toiletries, perfumes, creams, lotions and mascaras, and is recognised worldwide for use in personal care cosmetics. The preservative is neutral in colour and odourless, compatible with a wide range of formulations. The exact composition of the active ingredients of the preservative:

Product Percentage
Benzyl Alcohol 85–89 %
Dehydroacetic Acid (DHA) 6–10 %
Water 4-6 %

The manufacturer recommends using Cosgard in such formulas

  • baby cosmetics and wet wipes
  • any type of face and body creams
  • deodorants and antiperspirants
  • decorative cosmetics (shadows, mascara, foundations, lipsticks)
  • cleansers (body gel, hand soap, hair shampoo)
  • sunscreen cosmetics
  • hair care cosmetics.

Effectiveness of the preservative

We often hear the question: "How long will Cosgard preserve my cosmetics?". There is no exact answer to this question, as the importance of the finished product depends not only on the percentage of preservative input, but also on the sterility of the manufacturing conditions, the composition of your product, the container and storage conditions. The exact shelf life of the finished product is established only in laboratory conditions by testing. But we can confidently state that the maximum concentration of Cosgard preservative in your cosmetic product will preserve the product for at least 3-6 months.

Efficacy against microorganisms

The preservative under the trade name Sensicare 3000, which is known to many as Cosgard, has been shown to be effective against the following microorganisms in particular.
