Euxyl K712 - natural preservative for acidic environments

Euxyl K712 is a mild preservative which is a yellow to brownish coloured liquid. It is effective against fungi, moulds and bacteria and is able to kill pathogens even in already contaminated environments. This preservative has Ecocert certificate and is authorised for use in many countries of the world.

Component characteristics and specifics of use

INCI: Aqua (and) Sodium Benzoate (and) Potassium Sorbate

Dosage: 0.5 - 1.5%

Use: Euxyl K712 preservative should be dissolved in the aqueous phase or active phase of the cosmetic product and introduced into a warm emulsion. It is recommended to introduce at temperatures up to 40 C, however, the preservative remains stable when heated to 85 C for 4 hours. Works in an acidic environment at pH 2.5 - 5.5.

Storage: in a dark, dry place at temperatures up to 25 C.

Euxyl K 712 peculiarities of use: pH-sensitive

Euxyl K 712 is a complex aqueous preservative based on a solution of potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate. The preservative is easily soluble in water, it withstands heating, but the manufacturer recommends to introduce it into the aqueous phase or the finished product at a temperature not exceeding 40 0C. It is well distributed even at low temperatures. It is very important when using Euxyl K712 to correct the pH of the finished product. This preservative increases its activity and efficiency in an acidic environment, but at pH above 5.5 it completely loses its properties, as it changes into a stable form. At the same time, the pH of Euxyl K712 itself is about 9, and it can slightly raise the pH of the finished product, which is why pH adjustment is mandatory after the addition of this preservative.

Dosage of Euxyl K712 in cosmetic products

The Euxyl K712 preservative can be used in both washable and non-washable products.

• In non-washable from 0.5-1.5% (max. 1.96% according to EU and ASEAN Cosmetics Directive)
• In washable from 0.5-1.5% (max. 3.3% according to Japanese standards).

• All surfactant-based products
• Tonics

Euxyl K712 is well compatible with most cosmetic ingredients. It is effective in cationic, anionic and non-ionic environments. It is compatible with all surfactants. Fully soluble in water, pentylene glycol, propanol, glycerin and sorbitol. Almost insoluble in non-aqueous solvents, not suitable for anhydrous media.
 

Effectiveness of Euxyl K712 against pathogenic flora

The speciality of Euxyl K712 is its ability not just to preserve, but also to destroy microorganisms in already contaminated products. The biocidal properties appear within a minimum of 48 hours. It is capable of killing E. coli in 72 hours at a concentration of 1%. The graphs below show how Euxyl K712 affects different bacterial colonies over time. To do this, 0.5ml of the microbial mixture was added to 50ml of shampoo and mixed and then Euxyl K712 was added.
