Natural preservative for cosmetics EUXYL K 903

Euxyl K 903 is similar in composition to the well-known preservative Optiphen ND from Ashland and is used in a wide range of washable and non-washable cosmetics, including natural cosmetics for sensitive skin.

Component characteristics and usage

INCI: Benzyl Alcohol, Benzoic Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid, Tocopherol

Dosage: 0.4 - 1.2%

Usage: Euxyl K 903 preservative can be dissolved in oil, ethanol, propylene glycol or emollients. Slightly soluble in water: 12 g/l , 20 °C. Recommended for use at temperatures up to 40 °C, but the preservative remains stable when heated to 80 °C for up to 4 hours. Remains effective at pH 3.0 - 6.0.

Storage: in a dark, dry place at room temperature. Protect from direct sunlight.

Cosmetic preservative and its microbiological efficacy

Euxyl K 903 is a complex preservative that is used in mono-variant form and does not require the addition of co-preservatives. It has a broad balanced spectrum of efficacy against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts and moulds. It is paraben-free, formaldehyde-free and complies with the principles of natural cosmetics preparation.

Euxyl K 903 is a mixture of three components:

• Benzyl Alcohol 78,0 - 84,0
• Benzoic Acid 11,0 - 13,0
• Dehydroacetic Acid 6,5 - 7,5.
   

How to use in your formulas

The combination of benzyl alcohol with organic acids allows the desired preserving efficiency to be obtained, but with the gentlest possible action on the skin. Euxyl K 903 is used for a fairly wide range of cosmetic products:

• all emulsion systems
• washing and cleansing cosmetics
• wet wipes, including baby
• cosmetics for facial skin care, including the eye area.
   

Euxyl K 903 is equally effective against bacteria, yeasts and moulds

To kill microorganisms in contaminated products, the contact time for Euxyl K 903 should be a minimum of 48 hours. When developing cosmetic formulas, be guided by recommended input dosages of 0.4 to 1.2%, and consider the factor that preservative efficacy increases when the pH decreases from 6.0 and below.
