Nipaguard SCE is a natural preservative for cosmetics
Why is Nipaguard SCE considered a `green' preservative? First of all because it is EcoCert certified and approved for use in oral care products, effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, moulds and yeasts.
Nipaguard SCE is a broad spectrum preservative blend designed for a wide range of cosmetics and toiletries. It is particularly strong against mold and remains full stable from pH 4.0 – 6.5, thus the ideal option for low pH. Being a synergestic blend of sorbitan caprylate, Nipaguard SCE is 85% renewable, DIN ISO 16128 compliant and readily biodegradable.
Characteristics of the component and specifics of use
INCI: Sorbitan Caprylate, Propanediol, Benzoic Acid
Dosage: 0,5 - 1,5 %, however in the EU it is allowed to use up to 3,1 % in non-washable products and up to 15,6 % in washable cosmetics. In Japan, the safe concentration of this preservative in any type of cosmetic is 1.3%.
Solubility: fully and easily soluble in alcohol, glycols and other solvents, partially soluble in water (i.e. you can dissolve the preservative in a large amount of water, but partial insolubility in an oily amount of water is possible).
Usage: the solubility of the preservative in water is limited and is approximately 0.05 g per 1 litre of water. In order to easily introduce the preservative into cosmetics, you need to dissolve it in propylene glycol or polysorbate, for example; it is also easily dissolved in surfactants or emulsifiers. You can also inject Nipagard directly into a warm emulsion. The preservative is stable over the pH range of 4.0 to 8.0, but the greatest stability is observed in the pH range of 4.0 to 6.5. The preservative can withstand heating up to 80 C, but for its effective work it is recommended to introduce it into the cooling product at a temperature not exceeding 40C.
Storage: in a dark, dry place at a temperature of 20 to 40 °C.
Advantages of using Nipaguard SCE blended preservative in cosmetics
Mixed preservatives, which combine several active ingredients, have a wide spectrum of action: effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, moulds and yeasts. Due to its natural composition, Nipagard SCE is authorised for use in children's cosmetics, in washable and non-washable cosmetic products, as well as in oral care products. This broad scope of application makes the preservative almost universal. The only exception is the inability to use Nipaguard SCE in `acidic' products with a low pH of less than 4.0.
Why not all preservatives are harmful
A cosmetic product without a preservative is more dangerous than one with a preservative. Moreover, modern research makes it possible to produce eco preservatives that are plant-based but also highly effective. Many of them have received EcoCert certification and are authorised for use in organic and natural cosmetics. For long-lasting and safe use of handmade cosmetics, we advise you to buy a preservative based on natural ingredients.
What Nipaguard SCE consists of
The main active ingredient of the preservative is Sorbitan Caprylate, which is produced from corn and coconut oil. This substance has high antifungal activity, but also has stabilising, softening and emulsifying properties. The second component of the preservative is Propanediol, which is also of plant origin and is extracted from corn sugar. The main task of propanediol is to increase the stability of cosmetics, and it copes with it perfectly. In today's world, manufacturers are trying to reduce the amount of skin irritating preservatives and are increasingly turning their attention to this propanediol. Moreover, this ingredient is often used separately for skin softening, as an analogue of a vegetable solvent for complex actives (UV filters and acids), and as a conditioning agent in hair care products. The final constituent of Nipagard's blended preservative is Benzoic Acid. It has long been known in the market as an effective antimicrobial and antifungal ingredient in cosmetics. The preservative contains no more than 15% of it and this dosage does not cause any skin irritation or redness.
