Propanediol in cosmetics
Zemea Propanediol is a natural, skin-safe alternative to glycols and glycerin used in natural cosmetics. The component is ideal for a variety of skin and body care products including moisturizers, cleansers, anti-aging products, sunscreens, acne products, for sensitive skin, deodorants, wipes and baby care products. Propanediol enhances the preservative properties of the preservatives you use, increases skin hydration and relieves inflammation on the skin.
Component Characteristics and Usage Specifics
INCI: Propanediol
CAS Number: 504-63-2
Dosage (percentage of input in cosmetics): standard dosage 1-10% (allowed up to 40-50 in antiseptic%).
We give a recommendation of input, however, the optimal dosage for your formulation should be chosen by yourself depending on the full composition of the cosmetic, as well as the presence of other components in the formulation.
Solubility: soluble in water
Certification: Halal, Kosher, Natural Health Products Ingredient - Health Canada, USDA BioPreferred® Program - 100% Bio-based.
Storage: It is recommended to store in a cool, dark, dry place, protected from direct sunlight and overheating.
The benefits of using Propanediol in formulas
A greener alternative to non-natural glycols, Zemea Propanediol is produced through a proprietary fermentation process using plant-based glucose instead of petroleum-based raw materials. The resulting product typically has a purity of 99.99%. Zemea Propanediol is certified 100% bio-based under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's BioPreferred® program and is the world's first 100% bio-based alternative to glycol to be certified by the Natural Products Association.
The main tasks Propanediol performs are
- preservative booster
- humectant
- solubilizer
- effective carrier for assets
- sensory enhancer.
Propanediol is also used as a component in the manufacture of antiseptic agents, including alcohol-free antiseptics or mouthwashes. In both cases, propanediol is used in combination with polysorbate-80. It is often found in toothpastes as a solubilizer and moisturizing component.
Skin moisturizing efficiency
We measured the moisturization efficiency of m/w skin care emulsion with 5% of different moisturizers. Corneometer® CM 825 (Courage & Khazaka) was used to measure skin moisturization. Zemea propanediol was more effective than butylene glycol and propylene glycol in moisturizing the skin throughout the testing period.

Increasing preservative effectiveness
The minimum percentage of Zemea propanediol required to increase preservative efficacy by 1/2 the recommended use level.
- Zemea propanediol worked well with phenoxyethanol-based preservatives and increased preservative efficacy against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and yeast microorganisms.
- Zemea propanediol consistently increased the efficacy of each preservative tested with Aspergillus niger.
- Zemea propanediol worked well with natural-based preservatives and increased the efficacy of preservatives against yeast and mold.
- Zemea Propanediol allows for fewer preservatives to be used in formulations while providing additional benefits such as no skin irritation, increased moisturization and superior aesthetics.

Consumer sensory testing
We measured sensory perception during a blind test of three randomized m/w skin care emulsions containing Zemea Propanediol (20 wt%), Zemea Glycerin (20 wt%), and a mixture of Zemea Propanediol and Glycerin (10 wt% each). On days 1, 2, and 3, each lotion was applied to the palm surfaces of the forearms. On Day 3, subjects reported their level of agreement on a scale of 1 to 7 with 10 different statements. The lotion containing Zemea propanediol was rated higher on all parameters compared to lotions containing glycerin or the Zemea propanediol/glycerin blend.

Human skin patch test
A group of 207 people were exposed to Zemea propanediol, propylene glycol or control at 7 pH. Irritation responses were measured at different concentrations. Zemea propanediol did not cause clinically significant skin irritation after exposure up to 75%. In contrast, skin irritation was observed with propylene glycol at a concentration of 25%, with nearly a quarter of the population indicating positive irritation at a concentration of 75%.

Effective carrier of active ingredients and solubilizer
Propanediol has a unique set of Hansen solubility parameters. Software modeling has shown that Zemea can be an effective solvent for cosmetic active ingredients and functional materials. In the tests, propanediol performed well as the main solvent to maximize the solubility of ferulic acid and allantoin. Zemea propanediol performed well as a secondary solvent to adjust the solubility and increase the delivery time of ascorbic acid and glycolic acid. Zemea propanediol is well established as a solvent to optimize formulation structure and efficacy for salicylic acid and hexylresorcin. In a broad-spectrum daily wear facial moisturizer, the addition of Zemea propanediol effectively retains the sunscreen active ingredients ensulisole and sulisobenzone in solution during the evaporation process on the skin, resulting in greater efficacy.
