Rice bran wax in cosmetics
Rice bran wax is one of the natural plant waxes. It is a botanical treasure of East Asia, where rice is a staple food. In terms of hardness and properties, this wax ranks alongside carnauba wax and candelilla wax. The good compatibility of rice wax with the skin and its stability in creams, emulsions, ointments and balms have found their application in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
Production method: it is obtained from fresh rice bran by pressing and alternating extraction and cooling processes, according to the following technological scheme: rice bran -> extraction -> rice bran oil -> refining -> rice wax.
Characteristics of the component and peculiarities of use
Concentration in recipes:
- in balms and pomades: 1-10% (of the total weight of your recipe) or more, of the oil phase introduced
- In emulsions (creams): 1-5% (of the total weight of your recipe), injected into the oil phase
Method of use: melt the wax in a water bath with the other oil phase ingredients. A water bath of about 90°C is required to melt the rice wax.
Cosmetic application
This wax has a fairly high melting point and is therefore good at forming a dense texture in balms and pomades. It creates very soft, pleasant emulsions, light textures, very thin and gentle on the skin. Therefore ideal for thickening and stabilizing creams, while providing a softening and protective effect.
Cosmetic skin care products utilize the moisture-retaining properties of rice wax, while decorative cosmetics make use of the wax's ability to form an elastic matte film.
It is more often used in sticks, lipsticks, for making exfoliants. Rice bran wax helps to reduce excess sebum, which means that with regular use, it shrinks pores and makes wrinkles less visible.
Use of rice bran wax in cosmetics:
- Protective additive in daytime cosmetics;
- Booster additive in sunscreen cosmetics;
- Moisture-retaining additive in any cosmetic product, keeping the skin moisturized and elastic;
- Natural emollient that actively softens dry skin;
- Anti-inflammatory component in therapeutic ointments, balms, creams;
- Protective active component in creams for hands, body, nails, in children's cosmetics;
- Used in anti-age products, maintaining elasticity, turgor of the skin of eyelids and face, prevents wrinkles;
- Used in the manufacture of solid perfumes, lipsticks, mascara;
Benefits:
- you can use wax combined with oils and batters to create balms.
- In monovarietal, emulsifier-free creams, wax helps to “hold” emulsions by thickening the oil phase. These pseudo-emulsions are quite difficult to obtain and are often not stable over time. To achieve stable emulsions, we suggest you make better use of an emulsifier, and in combination with wax to get a protective and nourishing effect.
- in combination with an emulsifier: adding a small amount (1-5%) of wax to the emulsion thickens and increases its stability and film-forming properties, making the skin smooth and soft to the touch.
- in combination with other waxes (candelilla, carnauba, beeswax) in lip balms and lipsticks.
