Salicylic acid is beta-hydroxy acid, or BHA.

It is used to treat several skin conditions, including acne. It penetrates the top layer of the epidermis and breaks down the bonds between dead cells, which helps exfoliate and renew the skin. In addition, salicylic acid belongs to the aspirin group, so it also helps to relieve inflammation or redness.

For precautions on the use of cosmetic acids, see Beurre's article “Precautions when working with AHA/BHA acids”.

Features of salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is used in dermatology to treat acne and infectious skin diseases (has antiseptic, exfoliating and anti-inflammatory action). In high concentrations it has keratolytic action (loosens and sloughs off the epidermis, i.e. it serves as a good exfoliator for keratinized skin areas such as calluses, warts and corns). In low concentrations it helps to suppress the secretion of sebaceous and sweat glands. Helps to increase the permeability of the skin to other components. Used as a mild preservative.

Application of Salicylic acid in cosmetics:

  • Salicylic acid has an exfoliating effect, softening the upper layer of skin and plugs in the follicles, prevents the formation of comedones.
  • It has antiseptic and antibacterial action.
  • It has exfoliating, antiseptic, keratolytic and antiseborrheic effect, normalizes skin acidity, opens pores.
  • Effective against fungi at pH=4 and below.
  • It has a very positive effect on oily skin, prevents the appearance of pustules and is included in creams for the treatment of skin diseases such as acne and psoriasis.
  • It is often used in combination with fruit acids to enhance skin exfoliation.
  • It has antioxidant properties and is also used against dandruff and for scalp cleansing.
  • Reduces the number of blackheads and prevents their appearance, promotes whitening.
  • In low concentrations it helps to suppress the secretion of sebaceous and sweat glands.
  • Increases skin permeability to other components.
  • Used as a light preservative.

Recommended dosage:

  • In creams - 0.5-1.0 %,
  • In ointments - 1-10%,
  • In pastes, powders - 2-5%,
  • In a mixture with 90% starch and 5% talc as a powder against sweating feet,
  • In solutions for prophylaxis and treatment of skin diseases - 1-2%

Specifics of use

Salicylic acid (Salicylic acid) is a BHA acid. Maximum activity occurs at low Ph values below 4. Optimal pH for this acid to work = 3 at a concentration of 0.5-2% in the product. It dissolves well in boiling water, in alcohol, in the oil phase of the cream (melt oils with emulsifier on a water bath, dissolve salicylic acid) and with the use of Polysorbate 20 or 80 (heat on a water bath and dissolve salicylic acid in it, then mix with water).
