Sepiplus 400 - simple component for making gels and emulsions This thickener is not expected to be commercially available. As an option for its replacement in formulations you can look at another acrylate thickener Sepimax Zen. Sepiplus 400 is a ready-to-use polymer. It is an excellent gelling agent and emulsifier of the Hydro Swelling Droplets (HSD) type, which is effective at low dosages, allowing the manufacture of budget cosmetics. Produced in a leading French factory, Sepiplus 400 creates a special texture for gels and creams, leaving a delicate, non-sticky film on the skin. It remains stable in solutions with electrolytes, alcohols and in acidic and alkaline environments. What is a thickener and what types there are we have considered in the article BLOG BEURRE "Thickeners and gel-formers in cosmetics". In the article you will find their classification and a summary table. Technical data: Relative density: 1.0000 g/cm3 (20 C) pH (at 20 C): 5-6.5 (2% aqueous solution) Viscosity: 1000 mPa.s (25 C) To be avoided: reacts with strong oxidising agents. How to make a gel or cream with Sepiplus 400 Sepiplus is often used to prepare the following types of cosmetics: to make an aqueous gel: add Sepiplus to the aqueous phase, leave to swell and mix again. to create a cream gel: disperse Sepiplus in the oil phase and then add the aqueous phase while stirring continuously. to create an emulsion: disperse Sepiplus in the preheated oil phase (if necessary) or the aqueous phase until both phases are mixed. Stir until cooled. Recommended dosage: 0.2 - 3% Use 0.2 - 0.5% as emulsion stabiliser. To create gels, a dosage of 0.3 to 3% is used depending on the desired viscosity and the presence of viscosity-affecting components. And to create a cream-gel with the presence of oils in the composition should be used Sepiplus from 0.5 to 3%. Peculiarities in working with thickener In order to get a quality cosmetic product, you should take into account the following peculiarities of working with Sepiplus 400: if you prepare a cream-gel with mineral filters, they should be added at the end of the emulsification process. you should avoid the presence of Sepiplus and polysaccharides in the same recipe. Polysaccharides can reduce the gel-forming function of the thickener. to create a thick cream-gel (with the addition of waxes, hot method), heat the fatty phase with waxes until dissolved, then add Sepiplus, and then pour the aqueous phase into the oil phase with constant stirring. to obtain liquid creams and lotions, dissolve the polymer in the oil phase. Then pour the mixture into a part of the aqueous phase (30-50%), stir and then add the remaining liquid. Application of Sepiplus 400 in cosmetics Sepiplus is one of the newest thickeners & emulsifiers of Hydro Swelling Droplets (HSD) type. It is manufactured using reverse emulsion polymerisation technology. This technology has a number of advantages, including safety for the consumer and the environment (no solvents, unlike polymers produced by precipitation polymerisation), performance for formulators, convenient form of application for the producer: the polymer is in liquid form, pre-neutralised, easy to use, ideal for cold processes. What is the mechanism of the water gelation process? Sepiplus is a reverse emulsion with polymer chains tightly folded inside the aqueous internal phase. This thickener is able to change the emulsion from W/O to O/W. Thus it unfolds the polymer chains into the outer aqueous phase creating a linked chain of microgels. Since Sepiplus macromolecular chains are polyanionic, the polymer expansion is due to an electrostatic repulsion mechanism. What happens in the presence of electrolytes? When active or other ingredients rich in electrolytes (especially cationic ones) are added to the emulsion, the swelling process of the microgels is disturbed. This phenomenon is called the `shielding effect'. As a result, the volume of the microgels decreases, thus reducing the viscosity of the product. Sepiplus has been specifically designed to demonstrate high thickening ability in the presence of electrolytes. Thickener efficiency in different media and in the presence of different components 1. Viscosity in the presence of solvents: alcohol, glycerine, propylene glycol, acetone 2. Viscosity in the presence of sodium chloride or salt 3. Viscosity depending on the pH of the finished product MAIN ARGUMENTS TO BUY SEPIPLUS 400 1. Excellent thickening properties: in the presence of electrolytes (NaCl, mineral water, phenylbenzimidazole sulphonic acid, dihydroxyacetone) creates stable gels in alcohol-containing solutions Maintains stability over a wide pH range (2.5 - 11.0) 2. emulsifies and stabilises and therefore creates an excellent emulsion: any type of oil phase up to 50% oils without additional emulsifier, i.e. you get an emulsion without emulsifier. 3. economical consumption: allows you to create gels at low % input starting from 0.5% Stabilises emulsions as an additional aqueous phase agent from 0.2 %. 4. Easy to use: allows it to be handled both cold and hot does not require neutralisation like the well-known carbomer. In which recipes the thickener is used foundations and colour gels: it perfectly accepts dry pigments. sunscreens, sunscreen and after-sun products: disperses UV filters perfectly. mascara cleansers: wash gels and foams, shower gels and hair shampoos baby lotions skin care products: creams, serums, lotions, cream gels with a light texture. Products containing heat or pH sensitive ingredients hair care products The component should be stored in a cool dark place, protected from heat, in tightly closed original packaging.
