Fermented oils complex for skin Fermentoil Shiunko

Fermentation is a process of fermentation of substances under the action of various types of microorganisms (bacteria or fungi). This process occurs under the action of enzymes - enzymes contained in the cells of microorganisms. The resulting products are rich in amino acids, vitamins and antioxidants. They contribute to the stimulation of metabolic processes in the skin, its rejuvenation. And a special place among all fermented oils has acquired a complex Fermentoil Shiunko, containing a unique plant Shiunko.

What is Shiunko and its origins

Shiunko or Lithospermum Erythrorhizon, often called purple gromwell or red-root Lithospermum, grows in China in the Hunan region. The main active ingredients in Shiunko root are Shikonin and its derivatives (acetylshikonin and isobutyroylshikonin). Also present are dioxyshikonin, β,β-dimethylacrylshikonin, 5,8-dihydroxy-2-(1-methoxy-4-methyl-3-pentenyl)-1,4-naphthalenedione, β-cytosterol, and a mixture of two caffeic acid esters.

What is Shikonin? It is a naturally occurring substance found in the root of Lithospermum erythrorhizum, a traditional Chinese plant. This substance is a derivative of naphthoquinone and it exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-edema properties, as well as influencing the expression and function of chemokines. Studies on angiogenesis have shown that shikonin can inhibit the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells, block the expression of integrin αvβ3 and inhibit angiogenesis induced by Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-a) and Melonoma B16. Source.

In the production process, the root is harvested and sun-dried, then the oil is added and heated to extract the beneficial substances, after which the finished shiunko extract oil undergoes a fermentation process.

Application of fermented oils in cosmetics

Cosmetics based on fermentation products are easily absorbed by the skin due to the breakdown of substances in the fermentation process and reduction of particles in size for better penetration into tissues, while they do not lose their beneficial properties.

Labio Korea has a patented technology for the production of fermented cosmetic ingredients. The patent was registered in cooperation with the Korea Research Institute of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology. The fermentation utilizes Pseudozyma sp. microgranism, which changes substances in the composition of vegetable oil and produces different kinds of polysaccharides and lipids. That is, at the end of the technological process, the oil is enriched with new constituents.

Conventional vegetable oils contain triglycerides, free fatty acids < 1%, α-Tocopherol, polyphenols. After fermentation, the amount of free fatty acids increases to 4-6%, the oil is enriched with α-Tocopherol and polyphenols, and Mannosylerythritol lipid (MEL) 0.5% is added

Benefits of fermented oils

  • No greasiness
  • Increased moisturization and nourishment of skin and hair
  • Increased skin absorption
  • Emulsifying ability
  • Antioxidant effect.

Useful cosmetic properties of shuonko oil

Among the large number of useful properties of this unique oil, first of all we would like to note its brightening effect, as well as increasing the rate of proliferation (reproduction) of fibroblast cells. And we already know that the faster the skin cells proliferate, the faster the production of collagen and the skin becomes elastic, wrinkles are reduced, the skin recovers from damage faster.

Skin whitening effect

Thus, there was a study that compared the effectiveness of kojic acid and shiunko oil in different dosages of input (0.01, 0.05 and 0.1%). It was found that melaninogenesis was inhibited by 15% with 0.1% Fermentoil Shiunko.

Hence, we can conclude that the introduction of Shiunko oil into whitening cosmetics will enhance the skin lightening effect of other ingredients. Fermented oils have long earned a stable place as part of the oil phase in creams, thereby providing active nourishment to the skin without the greasy effect.

Effect of shiunko on fibroblasts

A large study of the effect of Shiunko on fibroblast cell activity was published by a Chinese scientist in the article “A Study of the Effect of Shiunko, a Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine, on Fibroblasts and Its Implication on Wound Healing Processes”. Shiunko extract is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine and has been used for thousands of years to treat and heal wounds caused by cuts, abrasions, frost or burns. Shiunco has been proven to have therapeutic effects on granulation tissue formation, accelerated wound healing, re-epithelialization and angiogenesis, in addition to antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

In the graph below, you can see how fibroblast cell viability changes in response to different treatments with Shiunko extract. Fibroblasts and certain concentrations of Shiunko were dissolved in 0.5% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Twenty-four h after treatment with different concentrations of Shiunko, the viability of fibroblast cells was measured by WST-1 assay. Fibroblast cells in 0.5% DMSO were used as a control, and the relative viability of fibroblast cells treated with different concentrations of Shiunco was determined by comparing with the control, respectively. Student's t-test was used to assess the statistical significance of the experiments, and the results were presented as mean ± standard deviation ( n = 3 ), where ** p < 0.01.

Antioxidant activity of fermented oil

The following study showed the ability of Shiunko fermented oil to reduce the level of reactive oxygen species AFC in the skin, indicating its significant antioxidant activity. Determination of AFC content in fibroblast cells under different treatments of Shiunko. The AFC content of fibroblast cells in 0.5% DMSO was used as control, the ratio of cellular AFC in different Shiunko treatments was determined by comparison with control. Student's criterion was used to assess the statistical significance of the experiments and the results are presented as mean ± standard deviation ( n =3), where ** p < 0.0

Increased collagen secretion by skin cells

The same studies also found a correlation between collagen secretion and the expression of transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ). The rate of collagen secretion by Shiunko-treated fibroblasts was increased by 125-130%.

Transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) controls the activation of collagen synthesis in macrophages and fibroblasts. The second figure shows that TGFβ production increased up to 10-fold in cells treated with Shiunko 100 μg/mL. It should be noted that when fibroblasts were treated with Shiunko 300 μg/mL, the collagen secretion rate and TGFβ expression level increased up to 160% and 39.65-fold, respectively. Hence, these data conclusively demonstrated that Shiunco leads to an increase in TGFβ and collagen production. Detection of transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) expression by fibroblast cells in response to Shiunco treatment. Fibroblast cells and the indicated concentrations of Shiunco were dissolved in 0.5% DMSO. Twenty-four h after drug treatment, TGF-β expression was determined by immunoblotting, and the amount of TGF-β was confirmed using Fujifilm MultiGauge software. The expression level of TGFβ cells in 0.5% DMSO was used as a control. The relative expression of cells under different drug treatments was compared with the control. This experiment was repeated three times and GAPDH was used as an internal control.

To summarize briefly, the main cosmetic properties of the fermented oil can be equated to those of the active ingredients. The Shiunko complex has:

  • Antioxidant action
  • Antibacterial action
  • Skin cell proliferation
  • Collagen synthesis
  • Anti-inflammatory action
  • Healing effect
  • Brightening effect.

In which recipes it is recommended to add Shiunko oil

  • To all types of care creams
  • in hair care products
  • sunscreen cosmetics
  • in lightening products
  • in cosmetics for oily and/or sensitive skin
  • in antioxidant products.
