Silica microspheres in cosmetics

Silicon dioxide microspheres, due to their light scattering ability, are used in mineral cosmetics as filler and base, optically smoothing wrinkles and skin irregularities. Its marvelous mattifying abilities, make it ideal for oily skin. By absorbing skin secretions, silica helps makeup stay on longer, giving you a fresh look for longer.

Dosage: 0.5 - 30 %

Usage: not soluble in water or oil. The component is dispersed in the base, mixed with other dry components or added directly to a warm emulsion.

What is silica?

Silica or in other words silica microspheres under the trade name Sensibead SI 175 are porous spherical, ultra-fine silica particles. Silica comes in many forms and differs in particle size and covering power. For example, French silica Sensibead SI 175, which you can buy in Beurre store, has a fine particle size of 7.0 µm and its specific area is equal to 175m2/g.

Smooth, silky, white translucent silica powder is used in cosmetics and perfectly absorbs excess fat and is used for sebum control. Silica improves glide in cosmetic mixtures and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Can be used in small amounts to improve glide in mineral formulations. Easily absorbs moisture and grease. Can be used in formulations containing vegetable and essential oils. 
 

Cosmetic properties of Silica

• provides an excellent gliding effect from the cosmetic product
• low illuminating effect when cosmetic pigments are introduced
• has excellent absorption properties (see table below)
• when introduced into cosmetics has a “blurring effect”, reducing skin irregularities and masking imperfections, evening out the complexion
• improves the tactile sensation of cosmetics on the skin
• gives mineral cosmetics a silky texture, improves gliding, promotes even distribution on the skin 
• gives mattness to cosmetics without increasing the density of the finished product
• to improve adhesion of dry components with each other it is recommended to combine silica microspheres with the following ingredients: Boron nitride, Magnesium stearate, Magnesium myristate, Micas sericite.

Sensibead SI 175 silica microspheres can be used to absorb excessive sebum or sweat on the skin. In the table you can see the absorbability of different substances with Sensibead SI 175 silica in g/g (these values refer only to Sensibead SI 175, the absorbability of other silicas will differ from these values depending on the particle size of the component itself).
