Amilite GCS-12K Glycine-based natural amino acid surfactant

Amilite GCS-12K is a mild cleansing surfactant made from glycine, the main amino acid found in human collagen, and fatty acids. The Amilite G surfactant range was developed as a concept of moisturising through cleansing. Its unique mildness and ability to create a creamy, voluminous and elastic foam has made Amilite G surfactants a leading ingredient in formulations for the care of delicate, sensitive and baby skin. Maximum efficacy is achieved in neutral and alkaline conditions. Amilight surfactant leaves a fresh feeling on the skin after washing without a tightness sensation. The addition of this surfactant in formulations helps to enhance the foaming behaviour of the overall formula.

INCI: Water, Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate

Type: anionic surfactant

Main substance: 30%

Dosage: 2 - 55%

Solubility: in water

Peculiarities of use: The surfactant shows the best foaming in slightly acidic and alkaline environment. To enhance foaming it is recommended to mix with amphoteric and/or non-ionogenic surfactants. Do not heat above 80 °C.

Storage: in a dry dark place in a tightly closed package at room temperature. Keep out of direct sunlight.

Cosmetic description of surfactants

A series of surfactants called Amilite from the Japanese manufacturer Ajinomoto was developed to create a soft lush foam without irritating effect on the skin, which has a moisturising effect. Amilite A series is based on alanine, while Amilite ET-CS series is based on glutamic acid and threonine. The series differ from each other by the source of raw materials from which they are produced and by the type of foaming under different acidity conditions. The Beurre Shop chose the glycine-based Amilite G series, which exhibits high performance and enhanced foaming in neutral and alkaline environments, while the Amilite A series performs better at acidic pH. Amilite G surfactant breaks the concept of aggressive anionic surfactants, because the very principle of its action is based on gentle cleansing and simultaneous moisturising of the skin. Doesn't that sound strange? Usually surfactants only dry out the skin and cause irritation after washing. This effect is due to Amilite G's gentle action on the NUVs found in our skin. As you can see in the image above, NUF is 42% made up of various amino acids, and Glycine is the main amino acid in our NUF by volume. And the mild action of Amilite surfactant is precisely to limit damage to the skin's natural moisturisers. Amilite G surfactant has a completely vegetable composition and has a high biodegradability rate, which prevents environmental pollution. Amilite G fulfils the concept of sulphate-free cosmetics with high cleansing and foaming performance, showing higher efficacy compared to aggressive SLES.

Benefits when added to formulations

The surfactants of the Amilite range are very mild and hypoallergenic. They form a creamy, elastic foam and have a high foaming capacity in various formulas. However, to create the most abundant foam at slightly acidic pH (5.5 - 6.0), it is recommended to combine Amilite GCS-12K with amphoteric surfactants such as Coco betaine or Cocamidopropyl betaine and/or the non-ionogenic surfactants Decyl glucoside or Coco glucoside.

Personal tip: if you are used to working with blended surfactants such as Plantapon SF or Plantapon PSC, adding a small amount of Amilite GCS-12K (2-5%) can greatly increase the volume and foam density of the finished product, making it soft and pleasant while cleansing the face or hair. However, do not forget that Amilite GCS-12K likes pH 5.5 or higher. If you are preparing a more acidic product - look at another Japanese amino acid surfactant Amisoft CS-22.

Another positive point - Amilite GCS-12K allows you to maintain the level of foaming when adding oils, emollients or silicones to the formulation.

Advantages of Amilite amphoteric surfactant

  • The surfactant is derived from palm and glycine, the basic amino acid of human collagen.
  • a small addition of the surfactant to the formulation enhances foaming
  • in the mono version of the surfactant forms a creamy, elastic foam
  • gives the skin a very pleasant feeling of freshness and cleanliness
  • it has an excellent synergistic effect with fatty acid soaps in terms of volume and foam quality.
