Natural surfactant Coco betaine: benefits and harm
The mild co-surfactant Coco-betaine (Genagen KB) with a basic substance concentration of 30% is a highly effective viscosity modifier for foaming and washing recipes. Coco-betaine is a modified form of the familiar cocamidopropyl betaine, but with a milder action on skin and hair. The surfactant is manufactured under the order of the Swiss company Clariant at the Global Amines plants.
Component characteristics and usage
INCI: Coco-Betaine
Type: amphoteric
Main substance: 30%
Dosage: 2 - 30%
Special features: compatible with all classes of surfactants and particularly well combined with anionic surfactants. The 1% solution of coco-betaine has a neutral pH.
Storage: in a dry, dark place in a tightly closed container at room temperature. Keep out of direct sunlight. If the product freezes, allow it to thaw at room temperature and only then use.
Main properties of Genagen KB in natural cosmetics
Genagen KB is an amphoteric surfactant that has viscosity enhancing properties and is well compatible with the skin, especially when combined with anionic surfactants. Coco-betaine is generally used in the same way as cocamidopropyl betaine, but exhibits improved foaming and thickening properties of surfactant-based cleansers. Its low price and use in even small concentrations allows for increased viscosity, thus giving you the opportunity to create softer and more inexpensive formulations.
Thickening of complex formulations
Coco-betaine 30% can be used to increase viscosity in systems that are difficult to thicken (e.g. formulations with acylglutamates, Aristoflex PEA). The use of Genagen KB in cosmetics may reduce or eliminate the need for other commercial thickeners (e.g. Cocamide DEA). In most commercial shampoos, the ratio of sulphoethoxylate to coco-betaine is 6:1.

Genagen KB can be used in such cosmetic formulas
Surfactant is used mainly in combination with other surfactants to produce such formulations:
- shampoos
- bath foams
- bath gels
- shower gels
- baby cleansers
- foams and gels for washing
- intimate hygiene products
- natural liquid soaps, etc.
