Hydrophilic Emollient, Co-Surfactant and Solubilizer for Natural Cosmetics
Tegosoft 41 MB is a polyglycerin based surfactant. Tegosoft is PEG-free and has exceptional solubilizing properties, especially for light polar emollients, without irritating the skin. Tegosoft 41 MB is one of the most popular ingredients in the cosmetic market for creating clear micellar water without introducing surfactants into the formulation. The ingredient is not tested on animals and does not contain nanoparticles.
Ingredient Characteristics and Usage Specifics
INCI: Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate
Appearance: clear to yellow liquid
HLB: about 14
Dosage: 1-25%
Solubility: In water, propanediol, ethanol, essential oils (provided up to 10% is introduced). Insoluble in mineral and vegetable oils.
Certification: COSMOS, ECOCERT, HALAL, CFDA,
Storage: in a dark, dry place in a tightly closed package at a temperature not exceeding +30 C. During storage the product may become cloudy and form a small sediment, in this case mix thoroughly before use.
Natural solubilizers in cosmetics
With the help of natural solubilizers, cosmetic brands can significantly improve their formulations:
- They can increase foaming with a solubilizer
- Reduce the foaming of a product if it's a toner formulation.
- Even with 1-2% lipophilic components, you can get a completely transparent product.
In the BEURRE shop you can buy one of the solubilizers of the TEGO series from the German manufacturer EVONIK, which are produced on the basis of vegetable raw materials. Their line includes solubilizers for different products: essential oils, emollients and base oils, and each solubilizer will be more effective in its working area. In the table below you can see that TEGO Solve 55 MB and TEGO Solve 90 MB are the best solubilizers for dissolving essential oils without increasing foaming, while if you need to choose an essential oil solubilizer for detergents, you should consider SYMBIO solv plus MB and RHEANCE One.
TEGOSOFT PC 41 MB serves as an ideal solvent for emollients and TEGO Solve 61 MB is used for solubilizing vegetable oils. Now that we are familiar with the different types of solubilizers, let us examine the effectiveness of TEGOSOFT PC 41 MB.

Effectiveness of Tegosoft PC 41 MB as a solubilizer
Tegosoft PC 41 MB is very effective in solubilizing light and relatively polar emollients. For example, to dissolve 0.5% Isopropyl Myristate to a clear solution at room temperature, you need only 6% Tegosoft PC 41 MB, whereas the usual polysorbate-20 needs 11%. To dissolve 0.5% caprylic/capric triglyceride and obtain a clear solution at room temperature, you will need 8% Tegosoft PC 41 MB, while the familiar PEG-40 will need only 3%.

It is clear from this table that there is no one solubilizer for "everything", nor is there an optimal ratio. Each lipophilic component requires testing and selection of the working ratio to achieve ideal dissolution combined with transparency. Below you can see the amount of different solubilizers required to dissolve 0.5% of different base oils and produce a clear solution. Here, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil and TEGO Solve 61 MB are in the lead. But if you do not want to make crystal clear cosmetics - then the task of dissolving the oil in water is simplified.

Additional properties of Tegosoft PC 41 MB
Influence on the viscosity of the formulation
It is often the introduction of the wrong solubilizer that leads to a loss of viscosity in surfactant-containing detergent formulations. Solubilizers based on polyglycerol ester show a significantly lower viscosity reduction in surfactant-based formulations than, for example, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil. The use of Tegosoft PC 41 MB reduces the level of thickener in the cleaning agent formulation. The graph shows how a particular solubilizer affects the viscosity of the same cosmetic formula.

High cleansing performance in makeup removers
Results of a makeup removal test where 3% of the surfactant or solubilizer was simply dissolved in water. PEG-free solubilizers effectively and gently remove makeup, significantly reduce the surface tension of water, and have excellent pigment wetting properties. Red blood cell tests showed that all five products did not cause irritation. The graph clearly shows that Tegosoft PC 41 MB performed very well in makeup removal and took the lead. This solubilizer is the basis for creating surfactant-free micellar water formulations and is also widely used in moisturizing face washes and foams (gels).

Benefits for use in cosmetic formulations
- Excellent solubilizing properties
- PEG-free
- Produced on the basis of polyglycerin
- Has a positive effect on skin structure
- Replaces surfactants in micellar water formulations.
In which cosmetic products is Tegosoft PC 41 MB used?
Tegosoft is used as a PEG-free degreaser, especially in
- personal care cleansers
- in liquid soap formulations
- in bath oils
- in body oil bars
- in dry oil.
Tegosoft PC 41 MB is used as an emulsifier for self-emulsifying oil formulations such as oil bath concentrates, oil tiles, hydrophilic oils that spontaneously emulsify on contact with water.
