Zinc oxide is an anti-inflammatory topical agent with drying, adsorbing, astringent and antiseptic action.
When applied to the affected surface reduces inflammation and tissue irritation, forms a protective barrier against the action of irritating factors.
Indicated for “diaper”, and other forms of dermatitis, diaper rash, sweating, superficial wounds, burns, ulcerated skin lesions, bedsores, eczema in the acute stage, herpes simplex, streptoderma, trophic ulcer. Zinc oxide is also used as a base for the manufacture of decorative cosmetics. It has absorbent and anti-inflammatory properties.
Synonyms: zinc whitewash, zinc oxide, ZnO, zinc whitewash, zinc oxide.
Recommended dosage:
- 0.5-5% for therapeutic cosmetics.
- 5-25% for UV protection
- 5% concentration corresponds to an SPF of about 6-11
Degree of UV protection Zinc oxide:
Low degree of protection (SPF 2-5) - 5%
Medium protection (SPF 6-11) - 10%
High degree of protection (SPF 12-19) - 15%
Very high degree of protection (SPF more than 20) - 25%
Degree of UV protection Micronized Zinc Oxide:
Low degree of protection (SPF 2-5) - 3%
Medium protection (SPF 6-11) - 7.5%
High protection (SPF 12-19) - 12%
Very high protection (SPF more than 20) - 20%

Solubility: in alkalis and aqueous ammonia solution. For use in cosmetics, it is sufficient to disperse (stir evenly) in the aqueous or oil part of the cosmetic product.
Application in cosmetology:
Zinc oxide is very often used in cosmetics because it is very good for the care of sensitive skin. It protects the skin from the harmful rays of the sun and has an antimicrobial effect, suppresses odor.
In foot creams, zinc oxide is added mainly just because of its antimicrobial action. It prevents the decomposition of sweat, which results in odorless substances such as butyric acid. In addition, zinc oxide binds fatty acids such as isovaleric acid, which are odoriferous substances. The resulting reaction products are already odorless. Zinc ricinoleate - the zinc salt of ricinoleic acid binds odorous substances and prevents unpleasant odor caused by microbial decomposition of foot sweat. The salt of no other fatty acid has a similar effect. No other metal salt compares to zinc ricinoleate in odor suppression.
Until recently, zinc oxide was less common in sunscreens, but is now being used more frequently. Compared to titanium dioxide, it is more transparent and its optimum particle size is slightly larger at 100 nm on average.
Pharmaceutical applications:
The properties of zinc oxide account for its widespread use in the pharmaceutical industry. Due to its hygroscopic nature, zinc oxide has a drying effect and inhibits the viability and growth of microorganisms. Zinc oxide participates in many metabolic cellular processes (repair and regeneration), also has a bactericidal effect and ensures the narrowing of skin pores. It is used as an active ingredient in soft dosage forms. Zinc oxide is included in zinc paste, as well as salicylic-zinc paste (Lassar paste), Teymurov ointment, suppositories, etc.
Zinc oxide is a physical (mineral) filter widely used in sunscreen cosmetics. It is usually combined with other mineral filters to achieve optimal UV protection for the skin. Compared to titanium dioxide, it is more transparent and its optimal particle size is slightly larger at 100 nm on average. Increases the SPF of the product by one when the concentration is increased by 1%. Acts synergistically with organic filters. Effective in the UV-A range. Chemically and biologically inert, do not cause irritation, sensitization, phototoxic or photoallergic reactions.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity. Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
Precautions:
Avoid contact with the eyes.
Storage: in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight.
