Corn starch powder as a multifunctional component in cosmetics
Natural corn starch is of interest to many cosmetic manufacturers due to its diverse properties and wide range of applications. This plant ingredient is used as a base for the preparation of mineral cosmetics and dry shampoos. Cornstarch can serve as a thickening base for viscous masks and water-based scrubs. And by adding starch to the hot water phase, you increase the viscosity and stability of the emulsion, but avoid a sticky feeling. Corn starch from Beurre is a cosmetic version of kramal, produced with a special technology to facilitate the work with starch and improve the characteristics of the finished cosmetics. The component has Cosmos, Ecocert, Vegan certification.

Characteristics of the component and peculiarities of use
INCI: Zea mays (corn) starch
CAS №: 9005-25-8
Appearance: pale beige fine powder with no distinctive odor.
Dosage (percentage of input into cosmetics): 1-80 %
Solubility: in water
Usage: in cold water it has minimal thickening properties. When added at temperatures below 40 °C, starch retains graininess and gives emulsions a silky feel when applied to the skin. When added to hot water and further heated, cornstarch forms a gel of different density depending on the percentage of input.
Storage: Long-term storage is recommended in a dark, dry place at temperatures up to +25 °C. Protect from direct sunlight and moisture. Temporary transportation at a different temperature is permitted.
Starches and their use in cosmetics
By using vegetable starches in cosmetics, you ensure that the product feels pleasant on the skin after application, spreads easily without “white marks” and gives a matte finish to the skin. Cornstarch as part of the water phase of emulsions is able to remove oily blks. It also serves as a base for creating dry shampoos (cornstarch, vegetable powders and a little clay are mixed).
Application in mineral cosmetics
Earlier we have already mentioned that cornstarch has a wonderful adhesion and due to this fact it is widely used for creation of mineral and decorative cosmetics. Cornstarch can be the basis of powder or shadows on a par with micas, providing excellent adhesion of all dry components, having a matting effect on the skin, as well as giving the final product silky and soft after application.
Application in gels and emulsions
Cornstarch can be used as a thickener to create gel bases for facial masks or body scrubs. 10% starch forms a very thick gel to which you can then add the desired active ingredients. But remember, the water phase must be heated to create the gel. When added to cold water, cornstarch precipitates and has no thickening properties.
Cornstarch can also be used as a thickener for the aqueous phase when creating an emulsion. Add it to the aqueous phase and heat it until it forms a gel. In this case you will give the emulsion thickness and stability, but avoid the formation of a film on the face and the “snotiness” of the cream. Starch provides additional matting properties to the finished products.
Other uses
In the modern world, cornstarch has been used as a natural alternative to talcum powder, including replacing talc in baby powder.
Cornstarch is also an excellent additive when creating bath salts, absorbing excess moisture and preventing clumping of the finished product.
When creating bath bombs - cornstarch is considered one of the best fillers. Combining it with clays, powders, baking soda and citric acid, you will get a delicate mixture for a pleasant relaxation in the bathroom.
