Sodium phytate under the trade name Dermofeel PA-12 from the German company Evonik is a plant-based chelating agent that effectively inactivates metal ions by forming a complex between the chelating agent and the metal. Metals can enter cosmetic formulations from production equipment in the form of impurities from ingredients (e.g. extracts, pigments) or from the water on the basis of which the cosmetics are prepared. Metals in cosmetic preparations contribute to oxidation reactions, can cause discoloration and impair the foaming properties of surfactants.

Sodium phytate is used in combination with typical antioxidants (tocopherol, ascobil palmitate) in all types of formulations that are subject to oxidation reactions, to protect valuable ingredients such as unsaturated oils or fragrance components. In rinse-off products, Dermofeel PA-12 is used to maintain foaming properties in the presence of hard water or to prevent the precipitation of insoluble fatty acid salts in soaps.

Specific uses in your recipes

Sodium Phytate can be added to the aqueous phase at each step of the production phase (i.e. heating in the aqueous phase is allowed). Aqueous solutions of Dermofeel PA-12 have a strong alkaline pH, accordingly the component raises the overall pH of the formula depending on its dosage in the formulation. This effect must be compensated for with acids if assets sensitive to high pH are introduced into the aqueous phase. Therefore, do not forget to measure the acidity of the aqueous phase with a pH meter in order to exclude the moment of inactivation of certain components.
