Natural chelating agent Dermofeel PA-3

This natural chelating agent (aqueous solution of sodium phytate) effectively inactivates metal ions by forming a complex between the chelating agent and the metal. Metal ions can enter cosmetics through manufacturing equipment as impurities from ingredients (e.g. extracts, pigments) and through process water. In cosmetics, these ions contribute to oxidation reactions, can cause discoloration or impair the foaming properties of surfactants.

Characteristics of the component and peculiarities of use

INCI: Sodium Phytate, Aqua, Alcohol

Appearance: colorless to brownish liquid (at 20°C)

pH of raw material: about 3.0

Dosage: 

• in non-washable products 0.05 - 0.2 %
• in washable products 0.1 - 0.2 %

Solubility: in water, heating in the aqueous phase is allowed.

Usage details: Dermofeel PA-3 can be added to the aqueous phase at any stage of the preparation process. Please note the low pH (3.0) of the component itself. For work with acid sensitive raw materials, it is recommended to first dissolve Dermofeel PA-3 in water and then add the other substances. It is not recommended for B/M emulsions. Pink coloration is possible due to the action of iron ions (e.g. in the presence of avobenzone).

Storage: in a tightly closed container, in a dry place at ambient temperature. 

Sodium Phytate and its use in cosmetics

Dermofeel PA-3 is an aqueous solution of the well-known plant chelator Sodium Phytate. For high efficiency, it is used in combination with typical antioxidants (tocopherol, ascobil palmitate) in all formulations that are subject to oxidation reactions, to protect valuable ingredients such as unsaturated oils or aromatic components.

Sodium Phytate is one of the most popular eco-friendly chelators that degrades quickly and easily. Less biodegradable chelators such as EDTA mobilize toxic heavy metals from sediments in sewage systems or waterways. These metals can then re-enter the food chain and subsequently pose a risk to humans and their natural food source. Dermofeel PA-3 is a natural ingredient that is easily broken down by microorganisms. Thus minimizing the environmental risk of heavy metal mobilization.
 

Effectiveness of use: chelating ability of Dermofeel PA

Comparison of stability constants of Dermofeel PA complexes at pH 6 (INCI: Phytic Acid, Aqua) and EDTA. Dermofeel PA-3 is a stabilized solution of Dermofeel PA and therefore presents the same activity.

The chelating efficacy of Dermofeel PA/PA-3 is essentially comparable to the chelating activity of the commonly used EDTA. However, EDTA is not at all suitable for formulating natural cosmetics and is not a rapidly degradable product.
