Emulsifier OLIVEM 900 or Sorbitan Olivate in cosmetics

Olivem 900 is a PEG-free W/O and W/S emulsifier designed to improve the dispersion of pigments and mineral UV filters, as well as to provide water resistance and stability in sunscreens and all types of powder. Olivem 900 is often used as a structuring agent in O/W formulations (works great in tandem with Olivem 2090) and anhydrous formulas. The emulsifier acts as a natural humectant and sensory enhancer for a range of cosmetics and personal care products and is COSMOS approved.

Appearance: light beige flakes

HLB: 4-5

Dosage: 1 - 10%

• 5-7.5% in water/oil emulsions w/o as the only emulsifier,
• 1-10% as a dispersant of dry substances and pigments, and for the creation of oil gels,
• 1-3% as a functional lipid,
• 1-2% as a co-emulsifier of the oil/water type o/w
• 2-3% as a co-emulsifier of the water/oil type w/o or water/silicones w/s.

Use: dissolve in oil at a temperature of 65-75°C. The emulsifier is also soluble in the following substances: alcohol (ethanol), ethyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol, and dispersible in hot water.

Features of the use of the emulsifier in cosmetics

Sorbitan Olivate is a sensory enhancer for skin care cosmetics and decorative cosmetics formulas, as well as a suspending and gelling agent, co-emulsifier and stabilizer.

Application in anhydrous systems

Olivem 900 is used in a large number of anhydrous formulas, since it performs a number of necessary cosmetic tasks. The recommended level of use in such products: 1-10%. It is used in:

• Lip gloss, lipsticks, concealer, sunscreens and pencils for lips and eyes,
  
• acts as a suspending agent and a good wetting agent for pigments and pearls (mics),
• provides good film-forming properties,
• is used to improve the distribution of physical UV filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) in sunscreen sticks,
• acts as an adhesion promoter, as well as a nourishing and velvety texturizer.
   

Gellifying properties

Olivem 900 easily gels cosmetic oils and works well with oils and silicones. Thus, 15% Olivem 900 shows high thickening properties, best manifested in jojoba oil.

Olivem 900 in dimethicone 350 can create a creamy gel, it all depends on the percentage of input of Sorbitan Olivate itself.

Application to emulsions for creating creams and lotions

In the development of emulsion formulas, Olivem 900 is used in an amount of 1-5% in both water/oil or water/silicone emulsions and oil/water emulsions. When added to formulas, it imparts smoothness, silkiness and ultra-lightness, acts as a co-emulsifier and emulsion stabilizer, as a wetting agent for any type of powder, and also as a viscosity enhancer. Olivem 900 has proven itself especially well in combination with the reverse emulsifier Olivem 2090 for stabilizing the emulsion of the oil-in-water type.
