Mineral pigments: uses for cosmetics

In ancient times, mineral pigments were used as dyes for body painting, icons, and totems. The basis then and now are the mineral ocher, lapis lazuli, oxides, and ultramarine.A variety of iron oxides are used both as a single toner and when mixing shades. They do not dissolve in water, but are dispersed in water, glycerin and oil, therefore they are approved for use in cosmetics for the eyes, lips, face, nail polishes and soap making.

Chromium oxide serves as a dye and shade regulator - a matte green tint. It is also added everywhere except lip cosmetics. Properties similar to iron oxide.

Highly purified ultramarine can also be used in everything except lip cosmetics. It produces deep shades of blue when mixed with titanium dioxide.
