Features of retinol, its forms and cosmetic action in the article "Vitamin A in cosmetics: application for face, body and hair"

Characteristics of the component and features of use

INCI: Aqua, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Retinol, Polysorbate-20, Cetyl Palmitate, Laureth-23, Trideceth-6 Phosphate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium
Hydroxide, Ceramide 3

Appearance: viscous yellow liquid

Active substance content: minimum 7.5%

Solubility: dispersible in water, not dispersible in oils

pH at 25°C: 7.0 - 8.0

Recommended dosage: 1.25 - 12.5% Vitispheres R8, but technically it is possible to use up to 25%.

Use: add at a temperature not exceeding 40°C after the formation of the emulsion. Add to formulas after mixing with devices such as Ultraturrax, so as not to damage the particles. It is enough to gently stir for a few minutes to distribute the product evenly.

Special features of use: it is important to remember that retinol cannot be combined with fruit acids or essential oils. Use with caution (only after consulting with your doctor) during pregnancy, because Vitamin A can be toxic in large quantities. The component is stable at a pH of the finished product of 4.0 - 8.0.

Storage: in a tightly closed container at a temperature of 10-15 ° C. Avoid temperatures above 40 ° C or below 5 ° C. Temporary transportation at a different temperature is allowed and does not affect the quality of the product.

Why use retinol in cosmetics

The use of products with an anti-aging effect is becoming an integral part of skin care regardless of age, because sometimes it is easier to prevent than to correct serious age-related changes. Wrinkles are formed due to a decrease in collagen and elastin reserves in the skin. This is influenced not only by time, but also by such unfavorable factors as sun exposure, stress, high temperatures, etc.

Collagen and elastin are synthesized by fibroblasts, whose activity is stimulated by specific molecules - ligands that bind to cell membrane receptors. One of the most studied of these molecules that promote increased collagen synthesis is retinol (vitamin A), which also activates genes responsible for the production of elastin fibers.

Vitispheres R8 - encapsulated retinol and its use in cosmetics

Despite its outstanding anti-aging properties, pure retinol has some disadvantages: it can cause irritation if the dosage is incorrectly selected and is inactivated in cosmetic formulas, which limits its use.

Vitispheres' patented technology provides a solution to these problems, ensuring the safe use of retinol even in high concentrations and long-term preservation of its properties. Encapsulation technology reduces the oxidation of retinol and reduces its irritating effect, making the component suitable for sensitive skin.

Vitispheres are a lipid core into which retinol molecules are embedded. The system is surrounded by a multilayer emulsifier membrane that protects the active substance, enhances its penetration into the skin and guarantees delivery to the deep layers of the epidermis. Dissolving on the skin, Vitispheres prevent moisture loss, expand intercellular spaces and improve retinol transport with the help of lipids.

A comparative test was conducted to test the preservation of Vitispheres and regular retinol in a finished cosmetic product over 12 weeks (at room temperature). The results are shown in the graph - even after three months, Vitispheres showed almost 100% preservation of activity.

Cosmetic and therapeutic properties of Vitispheres R8

  • Anti-aging effect: stimulates collagen production and accelerates skin cell renewal.
  • Improves skin texture: reduces hyperpigmentation, evens out skin tone.
  • Reduces inflammation: due to the combination of retinol with Ceramide NP 3, the likelihood of irritation and redness is reduced.
  • Moisturizing.
  • Protection from free radicals.
  • Restoration of the lipid barrier.

Vitispheres R8 allows you to develop premium quality skin care products that will meet the expectations of even the most demanding consumers:

  • Anti-aging creams;
  • Face serums;
  • Night masks;
  • Restorative lotions and gels.

An ex-vivo study (using Raman spectroscopy) using an emulsion containing 12.5% Vitispheres R8 (1% pure retinol) showed that after 8 hours, the epidermal content of encapsulated retinol was 39% higher than that of non-encapsulated retinol. Vitispheres R8 was compared to BHA/BHT-stabilized retinol (non-encapsulated) and to untreated explant (control).

Key benefits
Vitispheres R8 melts at about 30-35°C, which is the same temperature as the skin. The release of the active substance is smooth, without the need for additional triggers, which allows for controlled release of the active substance over a long period of time, ensuring higher efficiency. This is not the case with liposomes, which required mechanical stress to open and immediately release all of their retinol content.

A delivery system designed for use in cosmetic formulas to deliver retinol to the skin.
Ensures high penetration into the skin and allows for better availability of the active ingredient (retinol) than other delivery systems.
It has been proven to remain stable during mixing and storage, protecting the active ingredient (more stable than liposomes).
Does not cause an irritating effect even at high dosages of the active ingredient

In what cosmetics is encapsulated retinol used?

  • O/W emulsions (face creams, lotions, etc.)
  • Serums and tonics
  • Facial cleansers.
