UV filters
UV filters prevent early skin photoaging
UV filters in cosmetics (UV-filter) are a separate group of cosmetic components, with an action aimed at absorbing UV rays and preventing penetration into the upper layers of the epidermis and hair. Science recently discovered this group of drugs. They act differently, achieving a single effect - protecting the skin from ultraviolet radiation.
Types of UV filters in cosmetics: physical and organic
UV filters are divided according to their operating principle into 2 groups:
- UV reflectors (physical filters);
- UV absorbers (chemical filters).
Operating principles of UV absorbers and reflectors
- Chemical (or UV absorbers) are filters that contain substances in their formula that absorb ultraviolet radiation. Yes, they protect the skin quite effectively and can be with a high degree of SPF, but the danger of using them is that they oxidize under prolonged exposure to sunlight. Provoke the release of free radicals. This cream must be applied 30 minutes before going out into the sun, and it works for the first two hours, and then you need to wash it off and reapply it to the skin.Frequent use of such a cream does no less harm than its oxidation. Penetrating deep into the epidermis, chemical filters can destroy the skin barrier, because they do not neutralize, but only absorb ultraviolet radiation. There is an opinion that chemical filters are dangerous for the skin. In fact, science has not yet thoroughly studied the effect of filters in protecting the skin and their possible side effects, because photoaging is a fairly new direction in cosmetology. The only thing that can be said is that chemical filters have more side effects. Store-bought products combine physical and chemical filters.
- At the same time, physical filters or UV blockers work like a screen, reflecting the sun's rays. They are non-irritating, do not penetrate the skin, and cover a wide range of rays. Unlike chemical filters, physical filters are active from the moment of application.
Creams with only physical filters have two problems:
- Physical filters in the amount necessary for full protection (SPF>30) have a drying effect on the skin. For normal skin types this will cause discomfort. For oily skin, this is rather an advantage, because ordinary SPF creams from the mass market clog pores, causing inflammation.
- If you make a cream with an SPF of more than 20, it often leaves a whitish mark on the skin. Here it’s up to you to decide what is more important – skin with a white tint, or the destruction of the skin barrier from chemical filters.Physical filters are easy to remember because... There are only two of them: Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide.
On our website you can buy physical filters with delivery throughout Ukraine, as well as active complexes with several filters in their composition.Sometimes, among the disadvantages, instability of the emulsion is noted with a large percentage of the input of physical filters. On our YouTube channel we showed how to create stable emulsions and waterproof creams with physical filters and a high degree of protection.
