All in one: learning how to make universal cosmetics with your own hands

Remember the joke about men's cosmetics 8 in 1? Here you have shampoo, shower gel, shaving foam, washing powder and dishwashing liquid. One universal jar that is suitable for everything. Of course, in peaceful times, any woman will look indulgently at one man's "jar" of cosmetics and lovingly glance at her numerous tubes and bottles. The Korean method of care with its three or ten layers is not suitable for many now: long, expensive, and just not desirable.

That is why in our article we will talk about universal cosmetics and simple ingredients. The main criteria for such homemade cosmetics:

• a simple recipe with a simple technology
• a small number of assets
• the ability to reduce the number of jars and tubes on the shelf and in the cosmetic bag.

Cosmetics that you can't do without

To understand what products should be in your cosmetic bag, you need to remember the main stages of care. If we are talking about the face, it is:

• cleansing
• toning
• moisturizing and nourishing.

If we are talking about hair, it is:

• cleansing
• conditioning.

Universal cosmetics for the face

In such difficult times that Ukraine and all Ukrainian residents are now experiencing, you can easily switch to the so-called “2 in 1” products, the main thing is to think through the strategy of such a transition correctly.

The first stage is skin cleansing. And here let's remember such a product as micellar water. A correctly formulated micellar water recipe not only removes makeup, but also cleanses the skin well. It can successfully replace hydrophilic oil, makeup remover milk and cleansing foam. In addition, much less water and time is needed to wash off micellar water.

The second stage is toning, which uses a toner and then applies an active serum. So these two products can be replaced with a toner. Toner as a cosmetic product first appeared in Korea and combines the functions of toning, leveling the pH of the skin and nutrition. In addition, the product is slightly thicker than water and can be applied simply with your hands without using cotton pads.

The third stage, moisturizing and nutrition, often includes various types of creams: under the eyes, day, night, moisturizing, nourishing, and so on. Each of us often had a large arsenal of jars for various purposes. But in difficult times, a cosmetic bag can easily be reduced. Cream for the skin around the eyes and face cream can also be combined, the main thing is to exclude from your face cream components that can potentially irritate the delicate skin around the eyes. It is also important to consider the pH factor of the cream - for the skin around the eyelids, it is very undesirable to make a low pH (5.5 and below). It is better to make creams in the range of 5.5 - 6.0, then their versatility will be based. If you do not add too expensive components to your face cream, then it can be used for hands: oils, emollients, moisturizers and vitamins. This cream will keep your skin in good condition, and you can switch back to expensive face creams with peptides in a couple of months. Try to use universal and multifunctional components that are appropriate in any cream. First of all, such components are moisturizing, restorative components and antioxidants.

Universal hair products

One of the most universal and convenient hair products can be a solid shampoo. It is easy to make, it is very economical and easy to use. In addition, it can replace soap or shower gel. The recipes for solid shampoos have very few components: usually it is a combination of solid PVA Sodium Cocosulfate and SCI. The recipe can be enriched with 2-3 hair actives, for example, inulin, some hydrolyzate and the conditioning active Sofcare. To soften the effect of dry shampoo, corn starch and lecithin emulsifier Plantaquat NC are often added to recipes.

If you still prefer liquid shampoos, you can use ready-made bases Plantapon PSC or Plantapon SF. With these surfactant premixes, which will not present unpleasant surprises even to beginners, you can easily prepare a shampoo or shampoo-shower gel by adding just a couple of components and a preservative.

As for shampoo-conditioners - such products exist and are very popular, but they are unlikely to suit girls with long hair. They will simply not be very effective. It is also important to understand the basic principle of high-quality conditioning - low pH. That is, balms and conditioners always have a low pH (4.0 - 4.5) in order to close the hair cuticle and make it smooth and silky. They are not applied to the scalp and are used only on the hair, retreating from the root by a few centimeters. And shampoos - they should wash the hair and scalp well, without irritating this very skin. And low pH can act as just that irritating factor. That is, trying to make a shampoo-conditioner, we must sacrifice something: either maintain a slightly acidic pH and thereby reduce the effect of conditioning, or make an “acidic” product, thereby understanding that the scalp can very soon begin to react with peeling. If you can't apply the conditioner in the bathroom and leave it on wet hair, you can make a leave-in conditioning spray that is applied to your hair after washing before drying.

Selecting components for universal cosmetics

Whatever you are going to do, there are basic components that you can't do without. Absolutely any cosmetic product needs a preservative, and the most universal ones are Euxyl PE9010 and Germall Liquid Plus. They are suitable for any cosmetic product due to their effectiveness in a wide pH range.

No cosmetic emulsion can do without an emulsifier, a fatty and aqueous phase. Some of the most universal emulsifiers are lamellar, they form pleasant emulsions that are suitable for any skin type and body area. These can be Olivem 1000 or the phospholipid emulsifier Amisol Soft.

The oily phase can consist of universal emollients, which will not only give the cream the necessary nutritional properties, but also improve its sensory properties, remove stickiness and oiliness. For example, we like to use the ceramide-like emollient Eldew, because it also acts as an active component. To give light textures, we love the volatile and softening Cetiol RLF, and to restore the skin's barrier function - Sensolene and Squalane.

Even if you are making a universal cream that you plan to use on different parts of the body, do not try to add all the best to the recipe at once. Let it be several universal and multifunctional assets. First of all, such components can be moisturizing, restorative components and antioxidants. Among them can be hyaluronic acid, Aquaxyl, Niacinamide, Vitamin E, Centella Asiatica, Bisabolol, prebiotics.
