Silicones and Emollients

Silicones and Emollients

Why introduce emollients into cosmetics?

Emollients are fats and substances from oils that are responsible for the tactile properties of the cream. They are fixed in the upper layer of the epidermis and transform the skin immediately after application. When we test a product before purchasing, 99% of success depends on the emollient: whether the cream spreads easily, its absorption and the immediate feeling of smoothness and softness of the skin.

The formation of a protective barrier after applying the cream depends on emollients. It locks in moisture and creates the appearance of supple, hydrated skin. These properties make emollients an essential component of cosmetics both for dry and atopic skin, and for oily and problematic skin, replacing the “heavy” oily phase.

In addition to improving tactile qualities, emollients are introduced into cosmetics for a number of reasons.

  • Allow cosmetics to be quickly and easily absorbed and distributed.
  • Prevents skin from drying out and retains moisture.
  • Instantly relieves dryness and flaking of the skin.
  • Indicated in the treatment of atopic dermatitis.

Silicones in cosmetics

Silicones (English “silicone” - silicon) are high-molecular compounds obtained artificially from compounds of organic (methyls, ethyls, phenyls) and inorganic groups with silicon. In other words, silicones are artificial fats.

Silicones are introduced into cosmetics for a number of reasons.

  • Preservation of properties under temperature changes.
  • Resistant to hydrolysis and oxidation, chemically neutral.
  • Without color, taste, smell. Do not change the consumer properties of cosmetics.

Silicones are actively used in mass-market cosmetics and here's why

  • Compatible with water and other liquids. Create stable cosmetics recipes. Inert.
  • Gives skin silkiness and smoothness without a sticky film. Gives a feeling of moisture.
  • Regulate foaming in detergents and cosmetics.
  • Gives visible softening of the skin.
  • Improves the application of decorative cosmetics, making it lighter and more spreadable.
  • Improves the sensory characteristics of cosmetics.

Silicones are cheap and fulfill their stated properties. However, they have side effects: carcinogenicity, allergy and comedogenicity. It's up to you to decide whether to buy silicones or not.
