Natural dry hair oil without silicones: recipe for how to prepare
Vegetable oils are very popular in hair care. However, they are not suitable for everyone: using base oils takes quite a lot of time, and for some hair types they create more problems than benefits. Moreover, after an oil mask, you have to wash your hair with shampoo several times to get rid of the oiliness. Perhaps it was people who did not want to bother with washing their hair after masks and spend many hours on hair care who once invented dry oil - a wonderful way to apply base oils to hair in a matter of seconds.
What is dry oil: silicones or emollients in the composition
Dry oil for hair is a mixture of fat-soluble components with silicones or light emollients. Most often, silicones are used in industry. First of all, we are talking about cyclomethicone, its task is to dilute the oil, make it less greasy, and the application layer as thin as possible. Such products are most often placed in bottles with a spray or dispenser. Cyclomethicone is a volatile silicone, after application it evaporates, leaving a thin layer of oil. However, cosmetics with silicones in the composition cannot be called natural. Fortunately, there are a number of natural emollients that can replace silicones, which are no worse at lightening base oils.
How to replace silicones in dry oil: a natural plant alternative
To replace cyclomethicone in a dry oil recipe, emollients must have high spreadability. It is the spreadability indicator that determines the speed with which the emollient is distributed over the surface of the skin or hair over a certain period of time. You can read more about the properties of different emollients in the article “How emollients improve cosmetics”. High spreadability emollients or light emollients give a feeling of smoothness and silkiness literally immediately after application. They are best suited for use in hair cosmetics, as they do not weigh down the curls at all.
In the Beurre store you can buy emollients for making dry oil
- Plantasens Olive LD is a plant emollient that is an ideal alternative to dimethicone, made from olive oil, spreads perfectly over the surface of the skin and hair, leaving a velvety feeling without a drop of greasiness. In addition, it is heat-stable, compatible with all fat-soluble components and gives hair extra shine. 50-60% of the emollient is introduced into dry oil recipes, and the bonus of its use is the conditioning effect.
- Gosulin IL is a natural light emollient, made from coconut and beets, makes hair and skin silky. Dry oils of the luxury segment are often made on its basis, and 50-60% of the emollient is added to the composition, the rest is oils, vitamins, flavors. It can and should also be used in the summer, as this emollient is able to enhance SPF and is an excellent dispersing agent for physical filters.
- Cetiol RLF is another light natural emollient with moisturizing, radiant and powdery properties. Ideal for creating dry oils, tolerant to sensitive and baby skin.
A selection of base oils for dry oil: a DIY recipe
Of course, in addition to light emollients, dry oil should actually contain oil, otherwise why such a name. In order not to weigh down your hair, you need to use oils that contain mainly linoleic and linolenic acids. Such oils are classified as drying or semi-drying. They are very light, absorb well and do not leave behind a greasy film. It is strictly forbidden to use butters (shea, mango, cocoa and others) in the recipe for dry hair oil. With such a composition, your hair will simply hang like greasy icicles. Moreover, there is such a variety of light hair oils:
- Broccoli is one of the most commonly used hair oils with a silicone effect, very light, absorbs well, has moisturizing and conditioning properties, and can also give hair shine and silkiness
- Crambe - in terms of fatty acid composition, crambe oil is very similar to broccoli oil, but its price is slightly lower. This oil does not weigh down the strands, gives hair shine, nourishes them, is rich in phytosterols and tocopherol
- Jojoba is a liquid wax, not an oil. Jojoba has pronounced conditioning properties, is heat-stable, is well absorbed, does not leave a greasy shine, does not weigh down the hair.
Active ingredients that can be added to dry hair oil
In addition to natural emollients and base oils, active ingredients can be added to dry hair oil to care for your hair, moisturize it, and prevent breakage. Of course, these active ingredients should be exclusively fat-soluble and the percentage of their introduction should be minimal, so as not to weigh down the hair.
For conditioning, you can add Sofcare and Softisan - these are natural fat-soluble conditioning agents with additional nourishing and moisturizing properties. They make combing easier and give your hair a healthy look and shine.
- Mustard phytosterols Plantasens Crambisol is a multifunctional component that nourishes, moisturizes, conditions, restores weak and damaged hair. Gives hair brightness, elasticity, smoothness, removes the electrostatic effect and even increases the thickness of the hair. Sounds like a real lifesaver for any hair cosmetics recipe.
- Gamma oryzanol is not quite a common component in hair cosmetics, but it provides a powerful antioxidant effect and protects hair from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation, in addition, the component is fat-soluble. We recommend trying it in leave-in hair products.
- Various CO2 extracts can also enrich your dry hair oil. Here the choice is yours: nettle, mustard, burdock, hops and a huge assortment of CO2 extracts that can be bought in the Bure store. A big bonus from adding CO2 extracts to the recipe is the increased stability of the mixture, because extracts such as sage, rosemary or carrot contain a large amount of antioxidants in their composition and are able to stabilize oil mixtures.
- Essential oils in dry hair oil? Why not. They will provide not only care, but also a pleasant aroma. Any citrus oils are ideal for hair, they add shine. And if you add ylang ylang to them, your hair will have a delightful floral aroma. Also, the coolest combination of rosemary essential oil with grapefruit and lemon.
How to make dry oil
Very simple! You already know what components are needed. If your components, for example, Gamma Oryzanol, require heating to dissolve - heat them in an emollient, cool the solution a little and then add the remaining oils and components. That's the whole technology. If you plan to use your oil for several months, you don’t need a preservative, you can get by with antioxidants, such as vitamin E. But if you want to store the oil for a year or more, it’s better to add a fat-soluble preservative to the composition.
And a little about the percentage ratio of components. The emollient in dry hair oil should be at least 50-60%, here the choice depends on your hair type. Supplement the rest with vegetable oils. Curly hair can absorb more base oils without weighing down the hairstyle, but oily hair needs the bare minimum. Therefore, owners of oily thin hair should introduce more emollients and less oils.
All additional actives, including conditioning ones, take at the minimum dosage limit, here it is better to underdo than overdo.
How to use dry hair oil
You can’t bypass this point, because there are subtleties here too. The rule “The more, the better” does not work with dry hair oil. Even the lightest emollient can weigh down your hair if you bathe it in it. You literally need 1-2 drops for your entire head of hair. First, drop the oil into your palms, rub it in, and then run your palms through your hair. It is better to apply dry oil to clean, slightly damp hair. If your hair is dry, apply it to the entire length, 5-10 centimeters away from the roots; if your hair is prone to oiliness, you will only need half a drop and apply it only to the ends.
But if you want to create a wet-look hairstyle without using gel, you can apply more dry oil to your entire hair, or highlight individual strands with it. This is both care and styling.
